There’s a kind of scientific bias I think about a lot.

Imagine you live in a poor neighborhood. The city runs endless studies on putting a road through your area, but none on putting one through richer neighborhoods.

When it comes time to decide, they say the best available scientific evidence shows the road should go through the poor area.

You ask, but what about the rich area?

They say there’s no scientific data showing that would work, which of course there isn’t, because they would never study that.

4 days out from my life-changing surgery, @Aetna has denied the appeal for my brain surgery.

to be clear, when i signed up to aetna months ago, the coordinator had confirmed they would cover this surgery. then, a week ago, they said the surgery was too experimental/elective and denied coverage. we appealed. that appeal was just denied today.

now, my neurosurgeon is trying to do a peer-to-peer consult with someone at aetna to explain why i need it so we don’t lose the surgery date on monday morning. aetna is not being responsive.

this is sadistic and a violation of basic trust. please spread this so they can’t ignore it. they may not care if i live or die but people should know just what kind of company they’re dealing with. and please pray they are able to have a peer-to-peer consult with my neurosurgeon and have a change of heart.

I know young people living on the streets in tents right now specifically because their parents used their credit and ruined it, and now they can't get a landlord to rent them an apartment no matter how much money they have.

Eviction records and credit scores ruin lives.

I am actually very concerned about this tendency of people to dismiss people traumatized by therapists instead of being alarmed by the amount of people with that experience and assuming anyone with a systemic critique must be traumatized and therefore not credible.

as you're decorating for Halloween please don't use strobe or flashing lights, as these make the environment inaccessible or outright unsafe for people with seizures, migraines, low-vision, etc. this is a small way to be kind to your neighbors & visitors with medical conditions.

nothing demonstrates just how little regard the state has for its citizens like hurricane season. every year the policy is basically “evacuate if you have the money or die!” no preventative measures, no improved infrastructure, just everyone fending for themselves
