When we lived in Spain, we let our relatively young children (13, 11, 8) roam around our neighborhood with scarcely a thought about their safety. They'd walk several blocks to a corner market for fresh-squeezed OJ on their own, hit a popular novelty shop (Ale Hop) even further away. We'd leave them playing in the grassy fields of Retiro Park while we had cafe con leches well out of eyesight. It all felt safe -- it all was safe.
That's not the case here in the US and we spend a lot of time thinking about why. In this terrific essay linked below, Stephanie Murray gets at the explanation.
"Blame the victims, blame the gun, blame anything but the incompetents making the policy and the incompetents carrying it out." | Kevin D. Williamson

Reporter: The president called you a loser.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis: “I am thrilled about that. That makes me qualified to be homeland security secretary and senior adviser to the president.”
So-called federal agents standing in the street enforcing local ordinances about pedestrian in the roadway etc is a clue they want this violence. They are creating it. They are killing people to feed their angry supporters & outrage everyone else. That’s it. That’s their point
@SkinnerPm I’m watching you on @jaketapper and look up your post to find I already follow you. Couldn’t find the post though. Thank you for the clarity. Also my husband and I love Savannah.
@EWErickson Agree to a degree. But assigning Walz/Frey partial blame for this is garbage.
The feds should not deploy poorly trained, masked agents who act like goons to our cities to deliberately cause havoc and create spectacle. Governors should push back.
You all forgot states’ rights?
@RapidResponse47 @Sec_Noem JD Vance said, “If I have to create stories . . . , then that’s what I’m going to do.”
Whenever Trump’s agents kill, shoot or commit some other outrage, everyone from Trump on down stick to a fictional story.
Don’t let them confuse you. Our eyes aren’t lying.
Not everybody who supported Trump and MAGA was a bad person at the start. But MAGA is a jealous god. It demands its supporters descend a path of degeneration to utter moral ruin. Police death squads today; who knows what tomorrow.
What country do we live in where video completely disproves what the government is telling us?
This is NOT America.
Republicans — are you ok with killing US citizens —- and then blaming the victims?
And NOT having a real investigation?
How do we survive this?
Okay so,
1) an American citizen exercises his First Amendment right to peaceably assemble and his Second Amendment right to bear arms, out of apparent concern that a tyrannical federal government is violating basic protections afforded under the Constitution
2) after coming to the aid of an unarmed woman who's been shoved to the ground by a masked federal agent, the citizen -- impaired by pepper spray, holding nothing but a cell phone -- is dragged to the ground by a group of other masked agents
3) during the scuffle, shortly after one masked agent removes the weapon from the restrained citizen's person, several other masked agents open fire, unloading 10 shots from close range and killing the unarmed citizen
4) despite video evidence, a spokesman for the federal government says the citizen approached agents with a gun, provoked a violent confrontation, and planned to "massacre" law enforcement
You really want to defend this? Go ahead. Just know, you look like an absolute fool.
A lot of what is happening now is Kristi Noem marginalized Tom Homan and the head of Border Patrol because those two prioritized deportations of criminals and gang members. Noem and Corey Lewandowski wanted broad, public round-ups without prioritizing the illegal aliens. They have bypassed Homan and the head of Border Patrol and elevated Greg Bovino because they want the public confrontations and displays. And that's not the progressive press reporting this. That's the conservative Fox News, New York Post, and Washington Examiner:

It is not just Tim Walz and Jacob Frey driving tensions. It is a policy choice made by the Secretary of Homeland Security and those around her because they thought it would make for great coverage.
@JonahDispatch My husband has lung cancer and his doctor wants him to get the RSV vaccine every other year. Pharmacy has no guidance from CDC to permit that so they refused.
