This article from @VitalikButerin triggered an interesting comment internally from Josh, our head of protocol architecture at RDX Works:

From a system architecture point of view, I think Vitalik is doing mental gymnastics with  "enshrinement" and "minimum viable enshrinement" to compensate for Ethereum's past architecture sins.

To a systems programmer, what he’s describing is simply the management of what are the correct abstractions in a system.

More generally it is the age-old system programmer’s problem of how do we retain application flexibility/abstraction whilst maintaining performance/standardization (every layer of indirection has a cost!).

Many solutions to this problem have been found without having to make big tradeoffs between the two. For example:
- Virtual Memory
- VM-aware CPUs
- User space drivers
- Paravirtualization

In Ethereum’s case, they have an oversimplified architecture of just two layers: software (EVM Code) and hardware (EVM), and a case of "not enough layers of indirection".

This forces them to decide between certain logic should be in the “abstract” category or in the “enshrined” category.

In the case of Radix, I think it is a more “traditional” stack which is able to retain both abstraction and performance/standardization for certain things without requiring this notion of “enshrinement”.
