On a long-distance bus from Pretoria to Beitbridge Border Post between Zimbabwe and South Africa, the conductor makes his passengers an irresistible offer: he can help them extend their stay in South Africa beyond the 90-day legal limit โ for a small fee.
Many of his passengers are undocumented foreign nationals who should be on their way back to Zimbabwe. Instead, they will pay the fee to obtain a new 90-day stamp and โlegallyโ remain in the country. Many of them won't even stand face to face with immigration officials who stamp their passports.
On these long-distance buses, this practice โ called buying days โ is common, as bus drivers and Home Affairs officials line their pockets at the expense of those desperate to remain in South Africa.
Millions of Zimbabweans have fled to South Africa - and are desperate to stay there to eke out a living - due to protracted political, economic and social problems back home largely caused by damaging leadership, governance and policy failures, as well as extended periods of mismanagement and corruption. Carte Blanche investigates the story.

Internet data wars
Sound bites and anecdotes make John a dull boy
Imagine arguing car prices must fall. A noble cause. Then going on to use the price of a Rolls Royce as an example of how expensive cars are.
Letโs take this social experiment to its logical conclusion. You make a protest video comparing the price of a Rolls Royce to the average income in the country. And to gaslight, go on to show how a teacher can never afford a Rolls Royce with their life time earnings?
People will think youโre crazy or a meme of a very strong illegal substance.
Not so in Zimbabwe and the clarion call for "data prices must fall." This wind blow a gale forced even the ICT Minister to join in as well as many influencers.
Crucify Econet. Break the monopoly. Bring Starlink. So went the sound bites.
How mistaken can the collective be? I am least worried about the collective as I am with constructing public policy based on faulty sound bites.
The Facts.
Most people who use the internet, use mobile data. That is on their smart phone. According to Protraz that is 9.9million people or 99% of internet users. A paltry of Zimbabweans are on wifi. Of those on WiFi I estimate only 1% are on unlimited data or the heavy data bundles. The Rolls Royce of data. Seriously who pays for US$170 on data a month? In a country as Zimstats and WB concluded the average earnings of over 90% of the population is less than US$75 a month?
The average user in Zimbabwe, the 99%, use social media bundles. The common being 20MB at $568zwl. That๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝs 10c or 7c in dollars using the official and parallel market rates. 10c per 20MB translates to 2c/MB or US$20 a Gigabyte. How does that look and compare to other countries? In Ghana social media bundle is 11c/MB comparable Kenya bundle is 3c/MB. These are countries with far more people and much bigger networks.
This is what you must compare. And not the delusions of comparing Rolls Royce of data packages. It turns out Econet, which is not a monopoly by the way, is by far the cheapest data provider in Africa. Not of its own making. But of a government that buys hook line and sinker false narratives about data. The people that are within the earshot of the regulators and ministers are those that buy Rolls Royce of data- and they complain ad nauseam. As any Rolls Royce owner does. But this should never drive public policy.
Why has the regulator been slow in approving price increases? And only 100% where inflation is 853%? Why is the regulator sabotaging the industry? An industry that requires heavy investment in hard currency. And ever so often? Why is parliament and politicians egging this nonsense?
Starlink wonโt make a dent on data usage in Zimbabwe. The minority rich in Zimbabwe are delusional. Most people wonโt be able to buy the gadget. And US$99 a month is competiting with less than 1% of data users. Yet the national consciousness has caught on this false narrative.
What brings about this collective delusion?
In the past the dollar bill was a gold certificate (redeemable in Gold),in present day the dollar bill is a legal tender (backed by SIs).It drive its value from public confidence and how much of it is in circulation. The gold standard is currently not being used by any governmnt.
The interviewer should go ask for a school fees refund AND pay the interviewee for the lesson deliveredโฆ.
Itโs shocking how so many people donโt get this important factโฆ
Weโve never met but I had to fly to Miami to look this man @TheAnswerMMA in the eyes, hug him and shake his hand. Iโve been moved & motivated by his story โค๏ธ
He recently won his first fight in the @ufc.
He had $7 bucks in his bank account when he won.
He sleeps on a couch in the gym.
After the fight, he sold his fight gear (trunks & gloves) on line and made $7,000. Instead of using the money to find a place to live, he built a bush pump so his village back in Zimbabwe can have clean water.
He never asked me for anything, but I just wanted to help the guy out. $7 Bucks ya know.
And I felt the MANA & emotion in every hug ๐๐ช๐พ
Very good and very special day.
