Everything is rooted in hypocrisy. This World Cup is bringing more of their hypocrisies to the foray, just as the genocide in Gaza began exposing to us about the collective West.

When Aboutrika himself showed support for Palestinians as they were being massacred, he was charged by FIFA who said players should maintain political neutrality. Meanwhile Haiti's kits are far too political symbolically for displaying a minor historical reference. Yet when it came to solidarity with Ukraine, FIFA went above and beyond to embrace and highlight the issue— taking a political stance in an ongoing conflict became completely depoliticized overnight.

So much blatant inconsistency. European footballing authorities especially, have long punished players for displaying pro-Palestinian sentiment in particular as well for other messages that don't align with their own mainstream western narratives.

For the longest time European football associations vigorously upheld the notion that football shouldn't be politicized. Celtic were regularly punished because their fans displayed support for Palestine, whilst players like Aboutrika and Freddy Kanoute were fined for the same reason.

Football has always been intertwined with nationalism especially; it's hard for it to not become politicised or be used as a political tool or for political expression because of the stage and platform it provides.

There should've never been any repression from the very beginning.
