Price controls on groceries aren't strictly bad so much as irrelevant and outdated in modern-day America.

Soviet price controls sort of made sense, but American grocery stores are hyper-competitive with razor-slim margins (~1% last year), they make money through volume. That includes high-margin items like alcohol, many staples have negative margin! There simply isn't any juice to squeeze.

I am personally libertarian-leaning, but even avowed statists generally recognize that price controls only accomplish their aims in industries that can be meaningfully shaped by them, with high-margin/low volume goods and services being the obvious candidate. Groceries are the opposite.
