September is baby turtle season. Turtle eggs laid back in June are coming out of the ground in September and early October.

Box turtles, snappers, painted turtles - mom left months ago and never came back. A hatchling digs up out of the nest chamber, sits at the surface, and then walks, sometimes hundreds of yards, to water or to cover.

Even as a tiny new baby, that turtle knows where it's going. A hatchling crossing your lawn is not lost. It's partway through the most important trip of its young life.

Very few of them make it. Raccoons, skunks, crows, herons, bass, and cars all claim them. For most species, the great majority die in the first year, which is exactly why an adult turtle matters so much. It took decades of mostly failed clutches to produce her.

So the default is to leave it alone and let it keep walking. The only reason to pick one up is if it's in trouble.

If it is, move it the way it was already going. Carry it to the far shoulder in the direction it was pointed. Turning it back toward the water looks like the kind thing to do and it just sends the animal across the road a second time.

And don't try to take it somewhere nicer. This is the one that gets tiny turtles killed by people who try to help. A turtle works out where it lives and holds that ground for its whole life, and box turtles live fifty years or more inside an area about the size of a football field.

Relocated adults are documented wandering, crossing roads, and dying trying to get home. Drop it at the edge of the nearest natural cover and walk away. Don't put it in a pond, don't take it home, don't drive it to the park.
