Bittersweet or woody nightshade. Either way it’s a wild flower that will not agree with you if ingested in this or it’s berry form. There are herbal remedies that include the twiggy parts but I would leave them in their historical context. #wild #flowers #somerset

Sorrel.  What a lovely leaf. It’s zingy, tangy taste can be found all year round.  It’s a fab addition to any salad or just to nibble on whilst out and about.

A Shaggy ink cap pair poking through the turf. This is a great mushroom to pick, clean up and fry. You have to be quick or else the inky spores are released. When they are at this stage you can see why they are also called judges wig.

Burdock in its second year. The seeds are held in the prickly little cases. If you’re a dog owner I bet you’ve had to brush them out of your pet’s coat. We used the massive first year leaves to line the Dutch ovens when we bake fish. Great stuff.

Bittersweet living cheek by jowl with holly. Also known as woody nightshade the berries are definitely OFF the menu. Poisonous as it may be it’s still a beautiful splash of colour in the hedgerows.

Haw gin. Last season’s haws have finally been bottled. Looks good. Smells delicious. Tastes great and is good for your heart. You have to love hedgerow infusions.
