🟥 536 DAYS OF CAPTIVITY | DR HUSSAM ABU SAFIYA
🔳 israel’s Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, @HussamAbuSafiya ensuring that the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital will remain imprisoned under the so-called Unlawful Combatants Law without charge, trial or evidence being presented in open court.
🔳 According to information provided to Physicians for Human Rights israel by his lawyer, Attorney Nasser Odeh, Dr Abu Safiya remains in solitary confinement in Nafha Prison under harsh conditions. His health is reportedly deteriorating and he continues to be denied adequate medical care.
🔳 Today marks 536 days since Dr Abu Safiya was seized by the israeli occupation. A paediatrician. A hospital director. A father who lost his son during the war on Gaza. A doctor who refused to abandon his patients while Kamal Adwan Hospital came under repeated attack. Six days ago, the world saw him appear before israel’s Supreme Court by video link. Today, that same court approved the continuation of his captivity.
🔳 As Physicians for Human Rights israel noted, the decision sends a clear message: a medical professional can be deprived of his liberty indefinitely without being charged and without the authorities presenting evidence against him in open court. Dr Abu Safiya’s case is not unique. It reflects a wider system under which hundreds of Palestinians from Gaza continue to be held while judicial reviews serve little purpose beyond extending their detention.
🔳 At this point, the question is no longer whether Dr Hussam Abu Safiya will receive justice. The question is whether the world will act before his name joins the growing list of Palestinians who entered israeli custody alive and never came home. If nothing changes, many fear that is exactly where this story is heading.
