🚨 CONTEXT:

For you, this may just be a fun 11 second video showing a popular Somali ref touching down to officiate a big game in Europe.

Behind that video, is a whole lot of meaning you need to understand.

Did you know that, ordinarily, one Confederation cannot just get up one day and ask a ref from another to handle such a fixture?

It usually requires a legal basis.

In this case, CAF and UEFA signed an MOU in Vancouver, Canada, in April that allows each side to utilise human and material resources of the other, as we see now.

The MOU, witnessed by CAF boss Patrice Motsepe and UEFA boss Aleksander Čeferin, covered:

● Youth & Women's Football: Championship

● Coach Education

✅️ Refereeing

● Institutional Knowledge

● Education & Capacity Building.

🇸🇴 Omar Artan has just become the most high profile African beneficiary of the Vancouver agreement.

PSG vs Aston Villa will be handled by the 34-year-old ref, making him the first non-European to handle an official game organised by UEFA.

And here's something else:

Did you also know that collaborations like these are why CAF is reluctant to openly disagree with UEFA when it comes to Infantino? Because such a stance will, very likely, shut off high-profile opportunities such as this one which Artan is benefitting from.

As I said in my explainer video at the time, "CAF does not want to jeopardise its institutional relationship with the better-resourced UEFA, but also wants to enjoy the benefits of as much Fifa funding as possible which Infantino will bring."

In the end, everything — and I do mean EVERYTHING — comes around to the politics.

For now, long live this collab between CAF and UEFA, which expires on June 30, 2031.
