The Bill Europe Never Paid

America owes Europe an apology. We interfered with the natural order of things.

That continent knew more war than any other place in human history. Civilization hardened there through fire. Borders mattered because they had to. Weakness was punished because it always is. Pretty normal stuff.

Then we arrived. And we erased thousands of years of defensive instinct in a single century.

But America owes an apology to itself as well. Because we sold the world a lie.

The United States lost hundreds of thousands in the World Wars just to stop Europe from destroying itself.

Then we paid to rebuild it.

Since 1949, the U.S. has spent trillions of dollars underwriting Europe’s defense through NATO. For decades, the U.S. has carried 60–70% of total NATO military spending, while European nations invested the peace dividend elsewhere.

Free healthcare. Guaranteed pensions. Expansive welfare states. All subsidized by American power.

Then American elites pointed across the Atlantic and said, Look. It works. Ivy League campuses praised European socialism as moral progress.

"We can make it work here too!" They never mentioned the footnote. It only worked because America paid for the guns.

Now a country on Europe’s eastern front with a GDP smaller than Italy’s can outproduce the munitions of an entire continent.

The EU’s combined GDP is roughly $17 trillion. Russia’s is ~$2 trillion. And yet Europe cannot sustain a major conventional war without American stockpiles, American logistics, and American industry.

We lied to them. And we lied to ourselves.

We exported a fantasy of governance made possible only by American blood and American treasure. Then acted shocked when that fantasy crossed the ocean and began hollowing out our own institutions.

A blueprint that promised comfort without strength.

It has only served to weaken nations, hollow sovereignty, and anesthetize survival instincts. Empires rarely fall to invasion.

They fall when they forget why they were strong.

And Europe is not the only one who forgot. Security must be paid for every generation. Skip a payment, and history forecloses.

We screwed up. Let's hope we can actually change course and do something about it. Europe must stand on its own. It is the only way. Allowing them to rise is merciful. Subsidizing them (and us) to death, is unimaginable cruelty.

North Carolina woman yanks the hair of a young pickpocket in Venice, Italy, causing the suspected thief to have a screaming meltdown.

The mother of 8 tracked down the suspect by using the ‘Find My’ app to locate the missing AirPods and her passport.

“I have eight kids, you’re not getting to me,” she told the suspected thief.

Right before the girls were arrested, one of them smacked the mom with a purse which had a metal water bottle in it.

“So my mom had a massive gash on her head, and it was bleeding everywhere. She got a black eye from it, and the girls were arrested. And then my mom had to go to the hospital and get some stitches,” the mother’s daughter, Karis McElroy said.

The mom ended up getting her passport and credit cards back.

This woman is a beast.

The tragedy of Gaza is a long one. Everybody has screwed the Gazans.

Imagine if Egypt had just given it up after 1949? Israel offered to accept it, with all of its people. Jordan also sought to attain it. Instead, Egypt kept it under oppressive military occupation.

Imagine if Egypt had stayed out of the 1948 War?
The Egyptian involvement in the war was a decision taken by King Farouq without any parliamentary input. He even surprised his own cabinet. He aspired to annex all of Palestine up to Ashdod, including Hebron to aggrandize himself and to provide the British a place to relocate their bases further away from the Canal Zone.

The people of Hebron actually revolted against Egyptian administration! And Egypt later even offered to exit the War early if it could keep southern Palestine.

Absent a southern theatre of war, much of the displacement of the Gazans simply would not have happened.

Royal Egypt was not yet the bastion of pan-Arabism that Nasserist Egypt was. Many Egyptians were principally Egyptian nationalists, and viewed the issues of Palestine and the greater levant as a faraway and foreign headache. And Egypt had its own domestic issues with the British in the Canal Zone and Sudan which were of greater priority.

Sir John Troutbeck, head of the British Middle East Office in Cairo and no friend of Israel or the Jews, discovered to his surprise during a fact-finding mission to Gaza in June 1949:

"[W]hile [the refugees] express no bitterness against the Jews (or for that matter against the Americans or ourselves) they speak with the utmost bitterness of the Egyptians and other Arab states. 'We know who our enemies are,' they will say, and they are referring to their Arab brothers who, they declare, persuaded them unnecessarily to leave their homes. . . . I even heard it said that many of the refugees would give a welcome to the Israelis if they were to come in and take the district over."

Imagine if Israel hadn't expelled the people of Majdal (Ashkelon) in 1949?
Ashkelon's remaining population was expelled after the Israeli-Egyptian Armistice and this was very illegal. These expelled Palestinians later became much of the principal support base for Hamas. There was no good reason for kicking them out. The government simply did not trust a large Arab settlement on the border with Gaza. However others in the Government were very fiercely opposed to this.

Imagine if Israel had stuck to its guns in 1956-57 and insisted the Egypt could not return to Gaza?

Israel had every intention of keeping Gaza in 1956-57. It restored Gazan municipal governments and local councils which Egypt had dissolved. It built infrastructure and assumed responsibility to provide social services for the pre-1948 Gazans. Some Gazans even began applying to return to Israel.

The US and USSR were very opposed to this, however. France, on the other hand, was supportive. DeGaulle (though a private citizen) thought it was essential to Israeli security.

When Israel left Gaza, it was on the condition that it go to the United Nations. Nasser undermined this.

Imagine if America, Israel, and the United Nations had insisted the Egypt could not return to Gaza in 1957?

When Israel withdrew from Gaza in 1957, it was on the condition that Gaza become a United Nations territory. The US and UN were of the same impression. Nasser proceeded to undermine this with a mix of inciting propaganda and sending agents to undermine a new administration.

The Egyptians came in and killed a range of "collaborators" who worked with Israel and others in the 1956-1957 period.

Then, in 1958, the Gazans asked Egypt to just annex them outright and relieve them of the burdens of statelessness. Egypt said no.

Imagine if Egypt had just annexed Gaza?

THREE TIMES the Egyptians turned down opportunities to annex Gaza. In 1949 the Gazans asked them to do so, and Egypt said no. In 1958, upon the formation of the United Arab Republic, the Gazans asked Egypt to do so and Egypt said no. As part of the Camp David Peace Process the Israelis offered to return Gaza (albeit for other border adjustments, such as keeping Yamit) and the Egyptians said no.

Egypt was quite disgusting towards the Gazans! They destroyed Palestinian neighborhoods in Egyptian Rafah which had been established after 1967. And they refused to allow actual Egyptians who had been trapped in Gaza after 1948 (people who'd simply gone to Mandatory Palestine as laborers during WW2) to return to Egypt and live in houses in the Yamit area which the Jews were abandoning as part of the peace process.

Imagine if Israel had a wiser policy in its Gaza Administration after 1967?

Israel after 1967 figured it would annex Gaza and give back the West Bank. Israel offered permanent residency with a path to citizenship to the pre-1948 Gazans in a similar manner as it had for East Jerusalem Palestinians. This this didn't go into effect.

Israel built settlements in Gaza, an area with few people to begin with. Imagine if Israel had just left it as a reserved territory for Palestinians, or at least didn't build Kfar Darom in the middle of the strip, and allowed for a fully self-governing Palestinian Autonomy? Israel's administration invested a lot in improving the quality of life in Gaza, but sticking a bunch of settlements in there caused issues.

Meanwhile Anwar Sadat suggested as part of the Palestinian Autonomy talks that Gaza be the launching pad for a full territorial Palestinian Autonomous Administration. A challenge was that Autonomy talks couldn't be done without the PLO though, as they were enforcing a boycott by Palestinians of such talks absent their participation. And the PLO was stupid and refusing to participate.

Dayan by 1980 was so fed up with the stupid politics that he launched a party who partial platform was Israeli unilateral implementation of Palestinian autonomies. The gist was that Palestinians couldn't really openly negotiate or agree to things because their own politics were obstructionist, but you could just set the terms yourself.

Imagine if the PLO hadn't turned down Israel's offer to dismantle Gaza settlements in 1993?
Israel early in the Oslo Process offered to dismantle the Gaza settlements. For some reason the PLO said no.

This had bad knock-on effects. When the bombings started and the checkpoints began being put in to protect the settlements there, it created obstructions for Palestinian quality of life that previously hadn't existed.

What if Ariel Sharon had extended Operation Defensive Shield to Gaza?
After putting down the revolt in Jenin, Sharon opted against a Gaza operation to route Hamas. He figured it'd be too costly in Israeli and Palestinian life - but the result was that Hamas was left pretty intact there. This caused obvious issues later when they seized Gaza.

What if Abbas hadn't been opposed to public cooperation in the Gaza Withdrawal?
Contrary to the public narrative, there was a bunch of behind-the-scenes coordination between Israel and the Palestinian Authority on the withdrawal from Gaza. Sharon publicly proposed coordination (which people forget) and Abbas said no publicly.

This fed into a narrative that Hamas had driven Israel from Gaza because of the Intifada. This is false, but its the narrative that stuck. And that fed into dreams of violent "resistance" leading to the wholesale destruction of Israel.

What if Egypt and the Palestinian Authority had cooperated with Israel in 2008-2009?
Olmert offered to reconquer Gaza and hand it over to the Egyptians and Palestinian Authority in 2008-2009. The Arabs said no, and so Hamas was left in place.

What if Israel had reoccupied Gaza in 2009 or 2014?
The idea was suggested by some. Ultimately Israel left Hamas in place because it did not want the headache of running Gaza.

Other hypotheticals.
What if the Arabs had accepted the 1947 partition plan? What if the Palestinians had accepted peace at Taba? What if the PLO had not been so corrupt and authoritarian that it prompted Gazans to turn to the then-much-more-honest Hamas? Etc. etc. etc.

The tragedy of Gaza is that everybody has screwed the Gazans, including many elements from within Gaza itself. Egypt, Israel, Jerusalem Effendis, the PLO, Gazan Islamists, the US, the USSR, the UN, Qatar, NGOs, etc. I'd contend that the Israelis in many ways are the least culpable, but their involvement is certainly there. Egypt is probably the worst of the lot and most at fault.

The Smithsonian should teach children the REAL history of Slavery:

- Slavery originated in Africa over 4,700 years ago
- Slavery was exported from Africa to the West
- The U.S. and England were the first to abolish it

Instead of teaching about the true origins of slavery and America's honorable role in abolishing it 150 years ago, the Smithsonian Museum of American History attacks America and white people as uniquely evil.
