The EVM may not be Ethereum’s long-term execution layer.

Here’s a look at Vitalik’s recent proposal:

The core idea is to replace the EVM with RISC-V by mapping EVM opcodes to RISC-V syscalls. In this model, smart contracts could be written in Rust — but Vitalik suggests most contracts would still be written in Solidity or Vyper, with the toolchain changed behind the scenes. Existing contracts would remain fully functional.

So if developers can continue writing contracts in Solidity, what’s the point of replacing the VM? Answer: RISC-V is simple and zk-friendly. Some zk-EVMs already compile EVM into RISC-V before proving. So instead of proving an EVM layer compiled to RISC-V, why not just execute contracts directly on RISC-V? The performance gains could be significant.

You can think of the EVM as a legacy, specialized machine — familiar, but not particularly efficient. RISC-V, on the other hand, is a modern, minimal, general-purpose architecture — much easier to work with in the context of zero-knowledge proofs.

Solana uses eBPF. Ethereum may move toward RISC-V. Different blockchains seem to be converging on simpler, general-purpose execution environments.

The EVM has been foundational, but perhaps it's time to pass the torch to something more zk-native and architecture-friendly.
