Egyptian blue (calcium copper tetrasilicate, CaCuSi₂O₆) is the world's oldest known articial pigment. What makes this anomalous is not the pigment itself but its recently discovered quantum-optical properties.

It emits near-infrared light with an exceptionally high luminescence quantum yield of 10.5%, making it a promising candidate for biomedical imaging, telecommunications, and laser applications.

Even when reduced to nano-sheets a thousand times thinner than a human hair, this luminescent quality is fully retained. The pigment also has a chemistry similar to high-temperature superconductors.

Washington State University researchers recreated the pigment in 2025 and found that "with just small differences in the process, you got very different results"

This suggests that the ancient Egyptians had refined and controlled production processes whose knowledge was lost by the Renaissance.
