Democrats have a pattern: Republicans break things, and when Democrats regain power, they don’t fully fix what was broken.

You can see it clearly with unions.

Republicans weakened organized labor decades ago through policies like the Taft–Hartley Act, which restricted union power and opened the door for right-to-work laws. Since then, union membership has steadily declined. But when Democrats have had control, they haven’t made restoring union strength a top priority or followed through with the kind of aggressive action needed to rebuild it.

Instead, they shift focus to other issues they say are more urgent, while the structural damage to labor stays in place for decades.

They’ll say they support unions. They’ll introduce legislation like the PRO Act. But it never fully gets across the finish line, and there’s almost always just enough internal opposition within the party to stop real change. That pattern has repeated for years.

Meanwhile, corporations have continued to gain power, shut down union workplaces, and resist organizing efforts, even while reporting record profits.

So the issue isn’t just that Republicans weakened unions. It’s that Democrats haven’t used their power to rebuild them in a meaningful, lasting way.

At some point, saying you support working-class people isn’t enough. If the policies that weakened them are still in place decades later, then the system is functioning exactly as it was left.
