take one look at veilguard's artbook, at all the amazing ideas the devs had and were forced to scrap because ea forced them to remake the game from scratch more than once. do not blame it on the people working there because "they made a bad game", these devs are troopers
"why are fic writers suddenly incapable of writing realistic arguments" "fic writers include too much exposition i already know these people" "fic writers need to stop using says so much" "what's the point of posting < 1000 word fics" i am going to hit you with my car
The fanfic discourse kinda boils down to Wattpad gave people the name of the chips and their flavor but AO3 gives you a full ingredient list and sometimes people don't want to come to terms with what's in their food
“That’s a slippery slope! We can get rid of the icky stuff without -“ no, you can’t. Because who is the arbiter? How do you get everyone to agree what’s okay and what’s not? Spoiler - they won’t. Setting the rules by what is legal is the only hard line that is easy to define.
Just because someone advocates against censorship doesn’t mean they just super duper love the darkest scariest topic you could possibly think of. It’s because they have seen, time and time again, how censorship disproportionately affects minority stories, queer stories, etc.
Media tried to do this between the 1930’s - late 60’s. It was called the Hays Code. You couldn’t depict problematic or illegal things on screen unless you properly condemned them. Characters couldn’t kiss ‘lustfully’. Criminals always had to get their due in the end.
Censorship is an Axe, not a scalpel. “I think this fic is reprehensible and shouldn’t be allowed!”. If the grounds for what is allowed isn’t ‘what is legal’, then who decides what is and isn’t allowed? Who decides what toes the line and what doesn’t?
I’m a little confused by the wattpadders showing up to AO3 all aghast at the existence of “RPF, Underage, Trafficking” tags like my dude what did you think your ‘my evil stepmom sold me off to one direction’ fic was? That is how that fic would be tagged.
