ورشکستگی فزاینده آبی ایران صرفاً نتیجه خشکسالی یا تغییرات اقلیمی نیست؛ ریشه‌های آن را باید در یک نظام سیاسی جست‌وجو کرد که تحت تأثیر ایدئولوژی، تمرکز قدرت، تعارض منافع نهادی و مداخله سازمان‌های نظامی برخوردار از ارتباطات سیاسی شکل گرفته است.

بیست‌وپنج سال پیش، چند روز پس از حمله تروریستی ۱۱ سپتامبر، ایرانیان در خیابان‌های تهران برای قربانیان آمریکایی شمع روشن کردند؛ در مقابل چشمان نیروهای امنیتی رژیم که همین امروز نیز مردم ایران را سرکوب می‌کنند.

در روزهایی که شبکه‌های خبری جهان، تصاویر تکان‌دهنده‌ای از شادی و پایکوبی در بخش‌هایی از خاورمیانه پخش می‌کردند، مردم ایران، در همدردی و همبستگی انسانی با مردم آمریکا، چهره‌ای متفاوت از این منطقه به جهان نشان دادند. رژیم شعار «مرگ» سر می‌داد؛ مردم ما نور هدیه می‌کردند.

ملت‌های ایران و آمریکا هرگز دشمن یکدیگر نبوده‌اند. ما یک دشمن مشترک داریم: افراط‌گرایی اسلامی که ۲٬۹۷۷ انسان بی‌گناه را در ۱۱ سپتامبر ۲۰۰۱ به قتل رساند و ۴۷ سال است کشور من را به گروگان گرفته است. ما همچنین یک ارزش بنیادین مشترک داریم: آزادی. آزادی سنگ‌بنای آمریکاست و همان چیزی است که ما ایرانیان امروز برای آن مبارزه می‌کنیم.

While global news networks were broadcasting shocking footage of celebrations in the Middle East region, the people of Iran stood as a profound, solitary exception of human empathy for Americans. The regime chanted death. Our people offered light. Iranians and Americans have never been enemies. We share one common enemy: the Islamic fanaticism that murdered the 2,977, and that has held my country hostage for 47 years. We also share a fundamental common value: liberty. Liberty is the cornerstone on which America is built and what Iranians are fighting for today.
