@MyNameIsMurray not used windows in anger in many years. I was probably using Win7 when I switched to Linux at work and during Win8 at home.

@MyNameIsMurray That'd be interesting, but annoying when there is a control you want to get to under the overlay, that word window would have stuff under it

I personally do not like auto hiding.

what'd be neat is if that top bar was *always* there on a maximised app, just offset away from the window controls, maybe even integrates with the title bar?.

@MyNameIsMurray I dunno, I think I'd start to lose where I put things on an 8k Monitor :D

and it is true, I am not maximising my windows much any more (but when I do, it's really handy!) - I tend to snap left/right 50/50 with 2 windows.

(I also don't know how people work with a single screen)

@MyNameIsMurray I might be the odd one out here, but my task bar is about 34px tall on a 3440x1440p monitor. There are times I wish I had more in both directions!

@MyNameIsMurray 90% market share says they need to be held to the highest of standards, otherwise we get windows 8!

I can't speak to all DEs but the main ones have either a top or bottom bar. Some have a side bar as well (horizontal space tends to be more plentiful).
