In 1869, two railroad companies were so locked in competition that they built 200 miles of the same track — twice. On purpose.

The Central Pacific came from the west. The Union Pacific from the east. Congress told them to meet in the middle. Instead, they kept going — past each other — laying parallel lines through the Utah desert just to claim more land and more government money.
