“Did I do something wrong without realizing it??” thoughts vs. “Even if I did, I deserve and expect the same amount of grace and forgiveness I show other people”
If you give people a reason to believe the world is worse, they will not fact check you.
Everyone knows that everything is terrible so even if it’s made up bullshit…“it might as well be true.”
I’ve always liked the phrase “whether you think someone is attractive or not is none of their business.” The actual radical position isn't “noticing” who you think is ugly by any kind of arbitrary standard, but deciding the category doesn't deserve your commentary at all
Here’s the thing with obedience-centered parenting: it totally kneecaps your ability to be an adult. Totally. Adulthood requires a willingness to act upon and change states of affairs that the logic of obedience is totally opposed to
Meant to expand on this: accepting "needs" as this core metric for relationship valuation means rejecting the intensity of the desire we can experience as humans. It flattens and rationalizes something which cannot be contained. This is market thinking creeping into the psyche
I say this not as critique of poly but of the entire pop therapyspeak premise of "needs" as quantifiable units of desire with which to measure our consumption of others: we are not Sims with green bars that an objectified other can or must satisfy
I thought about this and realized I believe people who care about you can mistreat you. For me I want to normalize saying "this treatment is unacceptable regardless of how someone feels about me" and move on from there
turns out, reading voraciously, moving your body, loving people without keeping score, protecting your solitude, chasing nothing but your own growth, and occasionally staying out too late with people who make you laugh until it hurts is not a bad way to build a life.
A key part of adulthood is understanding that the entire world will not reshuffle itself to cater to one’s individual preferences, but a side effect of living in an algorithmic, consumerist world is people believing it should.
