The revolution in Cuba did improve the conditions of the Black population there, but the limitation of the revolution was that it viewed addressing racism in Cuba as a matter of passing laws to outlaw racism rather than a project which involved actually empowering the Black population. Robert F. Williams recalled that he faced some challenges in Cuba due to his Black Nationalist ideology. Certain governments ministers were concerned that his ideology would spread to the Black population in Cuba. Williams had a personally good relationship with Fidel Castro, but others in the government were uncomfortable with his ideology which resulted in those officials trying to censor him. There’s also the case of Walterio Carbonell whose commitment to promoting Black Power and challenging racist narratives of Cuban history resulted in him being to a labor camp and accused of being insane. This is why racism can’t be reduced to a question of class struggle. Carbonell understood that it must be addressed at the cultural level as well.
