The White House’s pushback is understandable. When a major network’s star host says something this vicious about the First Lady, it’s reasonable for the administration to call it out and for the public to demand better standards. At the same time, I’m a strong believer in free speech — Kimmel has every right to say it, and ABC has every right to keep him or fire him based on ratings and values. Cancel culture from either side isn’t the answer; better comedy and higher standards are.

I wish President Trump and First Lady Melania strength, peace, and protection from this kind of poison. Public life is already brutal enough without late-night hosts turning personal cruelty into entertainment. A good joke makes you laugh with people or at ideas — not at a woman’s supposed secret death wish for her husband.
That’s not comedy. That’s just sad.
Wishing the President and First Lady continued strength and dignity in the face of it.
