My favorite part of @IntSchPrague culture week was not the celebrations of the 13 different countries represented in the classroom, but rather the profound connections the students found between all the different cultures.
In toxic cultures, you have to burn out to earn a break. Time off is how you recover.
In decent cultures, you take a break when you're low on gas. Time off is how you refuel.
In healthy cultures, you're expected to take regular breaks. Time off is encouraged to sustain energy.
Loved our 2nd annual Sustainability Fair that supports the 3rd grade UOI. Lots of joy, lots of experiences reusing materials and a great memory for all. Paper beads, toothpaste and t-shirt tote bags were some of the choices.
One of my students on what her future self will be doing for work...
"I will be a veterinarian, but my side jobs in case my clinic gets closed down will be a swim coach, journalist, or saint."
It was great connecting with a former grade 3 student (and current teacher @Ms_Kim_YangJin) from 2006 @SISGeckos! Thanks for reaching out and also for reminding me about the time I took our class Flat Stanley to the #Greatwall.
@Ms_Kim_YangJin@SISGeckos Oh wow, it is so good to hear from you. AND!! You are a teacher! That is amazing. Grade 1? And you are now 25, which makes me....super old. I am so glad you reached out and I look forward to following you on Twitter.
One of my students said, "Last Saturday I went to the mall and saw a Pac-Man game. It was inside this big air conditioner thing and you had to put coins in to play it".
I love teachable moments.
As a tuning-in to our #Sustainability unit, a field trip to a local landfill/recycling center. It was fascinating and we left with much to think about. Back in class, we built a cubic meter to help us visualize the 3 million cubic meters of garbage buried in the landfill.
@JeanneMorefiel1 As an 18-year ex-pat and a Seattle native, I feel more detached with every return trip to Seattle and the states. And as a person that used to live in hazy China and Malaysia, this fills me with a lot of dread.
Ss chose their first learning goal this week. They put on their future-thinking glasses and visualized what success might look like. I like that many chose to work on having more persistence, as math in particular has been tricky for several recently. #PYP@IntSchPrague
Tuesday evening self thought it was a fantastic night out, reliving my Seattle high school past and seeing @_Mudhoney. Wednesday morning teacher self has some regrets.
A super cute baby hedgehog was found on the playground today. Before being taken to a rescue center, Hedgy (the students named it) stopped by the class for a visit.
