The "Chicken Tax" (1963): Poultry Politics & Trucker Drama
When Europe taxed American chicken imports, the U.S. retaliated with a 25% tariff on light trucks… because nothing says "cluck you" like taxing vehicles. The "Chicken Tax" stuck around, forcing foreign automakers to build trucks in the U.S. to avoid it. To this day, Ford F-150s owe their dominance partly to a 1960s poultry feud. Talk about a *fowl*-proof business strategy! 🐔🚚

Yesterday was a wonderful first day of exhibiting for history & coffee at the American Alliance of Museums (@AAMers) 2024 conference (#AAM2024). We debuted our interactive #PublicHistory exhibit developed together with our partners Quatrefoil Associates (@QFAdesign). It explores national stories through the lens of Baltimore histories, with a focus on amplifying underrepresented voices.
