Congratulations to the residents of the Heights who have waited for years for more bike and pedestrian-friendly streets. Tonight, the Council voted 8-1 in favor of the Franklin St. safety plan.
Safer streets are coming to the Heights for all - bikers, walkers, and drivers.
Senator Scutari's grossly irresponsible e-bike bill has advanced again, despite being a knee-jerk reaction to 2 women being murdered by a man using a car as a weapon. It would criminalize e-bike riders and discourage safe and sustainable transport, and it must be stopped.
Revolutionary ideas such as Vision Zero, the environment-impacting bike share system (Citi-Bike), creation of miles of bike lanes and pedestrian crossing enhancements, Jersey City has commuted its way to being the destination city of the northeast as Our City is Transformed.
🧵 Major street safety redesign/bike improvements for Jersey City
🚨 On the September Council agenda, we’re putting forward a big redesign for major streets including bike lanes/safety:
• Summit/Baldwin (Wards C/D)
• MLK/Ocean Ave (Wards A/F)
@StevenFulop If Manhattan Ave can’t be made one way for the Heights protected bike lane, let’s remove parking for 3 blocks from one side of the street. So we can get from Kennedy to Palisade safely
@StevenFulop Thank you for your support of congestion pricing and opposition to the turnpike expansion!
Any chance there’s anything you can do to secure the full $670,00 state bikeways grant funding to implement the protected bike lane on the full corridor? If Manhattan can’t be made one
@SolomonforJC Thank you, Council Person Solomon!!! Snd you are correct, we should not squander more than ½ $1M to make our streets safer. Our award-winning department of infrastructure project for a reason far too much harm has already come to pedestrians and cyclist in the Heights.
@SolomonforJC Jersey City is a leader in safe and complete streets policy, and I am so glad we have leadership who continues to work toward implementing crucial safety improvements. Thank you @SolomonforJC
I am committed to safe streets for everyone, and I support the full proposal for the first protected bike lane in the Heights. I will work with Councilman Saleh to ensure that Jersey City does not squander half-a-million in state grant funding to make our streets safer.
THANK YOU Mayor Bhalla for your strong support of this project and for safe streets generally! 👏 This corridor will provide a much-needed way for cyclists to safely connect from JC Heights down to Hoboken!
Protected bike lanes are a proven way through Vision Zero to create safer streets for all users, and we should strive to create them wherever it is practically possible.
I strongly support a permanent PBL on Manhattan Ave and Franklin Street in the Heights, a corridor which has seen 11 crashes in 5 years - data that speaks for itself - and am hopeful this project will move forward without further delays.
This bike lane would provide residents of the Heights more options for travel between two parks and P.S. 8, as well as the potential to connect to Hoboken, the Essex-Hudson Greenway, and a north-south bike lane to Journal Square. Safety and access for all ages and abilities.
@StevenFulop Thank you for your public support of this project! Bike infrastructure is a critical public safety improvement, and I hope the rest of the council will follow the lead of Councilman Saleh and yourself in wholeheartedly supporting it!
@StevenFulop THANK YOU for supporting the full plan!! 🙏 Safety should always be paramount when making these decisions, and the full plan is by far the safest option, providing a full E-W connection across the Heights.
Plus—it’s fully funded! Any scope reduction would leave $$ on the table.
