P much this but to add, I don’t like saying people who’ve watched playthroughs are not fans. They’re engaging with something involving the games, but they’re more fans of the content that uses the game rather than the game itself. And refusal to play only enforces that
Tbh what actually makes me mad about the "can you call yourself a fan of a game you've never played" discourse is really just that people want to be part of a fandom more than they care about the thing itself, and I think that's kind of an awful way to approach art
