My peer-reviewed journal article is now out, "Soy de Zoochina: Transborder Comunalidad Practices among Adult Children of Indigenous Migrants." It discusses how Zapotec generations contest their racialization through sociocultural community practices.

Yesterday's march is nothing short of what has been built by our elders in the past 50+ yrs throughout #California and what as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren we continue to build and sustain- Indigenous sovereignty! #Indigenous#Sovereignty#Oaxacans#TongvaLand
Indigenous Oaxacans have always been a woke giant wherever we go (#LA) and our ancestral homelands in (#Oaxaca)! If we weren't, their would be no Bandas Oaxaqueñas, bailables tradicionales, Oaxacan hometown associations, orgs, kermeses, convivios, ventas d comida, stores...
When r we going to stop calling it by its name, RACIAL VIOLENCE?! When our Indigenous & Black children are attacked for the color of their skin, certain features, etc. it is not bullying!!! IT IS RACIAL VIOLENCE! WHITE (LATINX) SUPREMACY INHERENTLY TIED TO SETTLER COLONIALISM!!!
This sh*t is so triggering! It is an emotional rollercoaster! I just hope that for those children who like myself tried to hurt ourselves and internalized self-hate for how we look can overcome all this! #IndigenousAlways#Brownisbeautiful#Blackisbeautiful#BlackandBrown#LA
*Multiple Indigenous Oaxacan band members come together* at #LACityHall during a vigil with Black community members to demand the resignation of Martinez, Cedillo, & DeLeon. ❤️ #Gozona#Indigenous#Black#LA#Oaxaca
Oaxaqueños dance to a traditional Oaxacan band on the steps of city hall after a vigil along side the black community to demand Council Members Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo, and Kevin De León resign.
Hi Nury @CD6Nury ! To answer your questions…I’m one of those short brown Oaxacans living in Koreatown. I’m from a “village” in los Valles Centrales. Who are you? 🤎 #happyindigenouspeoplesday
Nury Martinez, Kevin de León, Gill Cedillo & Ron Herrera’s comments are very illustrative of the limits of latinidad. In a conversation about building a “ Latino caucus” they made it clear that us, Oaxacans are a racial other. “ Short little dark people” they do not represent.
Sharing this so our community is aware of the anti-Black and anti-Indigenous remarks made by LA City Councilmembers Nury Martínez, Kevin de Leon, and Gil Cedillo.
In this excerpt of a longer audio leaked from a 2021 meeting, they make racist remarks about Oaxacans in Koreatown.
It really does not surprise me how Anti-Indigenous and Anti-Black these Mexican LA politicians are. We hear it all the time from Indigenous/Oaxacan folks from LA who face this rhetoric daily from non-Indigenous Mexicans. And 9 times out of 10 it's always the LA Chicanos who
