महर्षि दयानंद ने संवत १९३१ (वर्ष १८७४) में सर्वप्रथम वेदभाष्य का एक नमूना प्रकाशित किया। इस नमूने में ऋग्वेद के प्रथम सूक्त का अर्थ किया गया था।

भाष्य की भूमिका में महर्षि ने लिखा था कि वे सम्पूर्ण वेदों पर इसी शैली में भाष्य करेंगे। यदि किसी को आपत्ति हो तो पहले ही सूचित कर दे, ताकि उसका खंडन करके ही आगे का भाष्य लिखा जा सके।

यह भाष्य काशी के पंडितों—जैसे स्वामी विशुद्धानंद मिश्र, बालराम शास्त्री आदि—को भेजा गया था, किन्तु उनकी ओर से कोई आपत्ति प्राप्त नहीं हुई।

इस भाष्य में महर्षि ने सूक्त के भौतिक और पारमार्थिक दोनों अर्थ किए थे। साथ ही इसका गुजराती और मराठी अनुवाद भी सम्मिलित था।

ध्यान देने योग्य तथ्य यह है कि महर्षि ने वेदभाष्य का अनुवाद सर्वप्रथम गुजराती और मराठी में करवाया था, हिन्दी में नहीं। यह नमूना-भाष्य अब लुप्त हो चुका है।
