A fish-shaped seal dating to 200–100 BC was discovered in Avanti. Its Brahmi inscription in Prakrit reads “���रस देवतह” (Sanskrit: “त्रतरस्य देवतः”), referring to a fish that protected the Devāḥ, echoing Vishnu’s Matsya incarnation.
