“I’m sorry YOU feel that way” is a non apology.

It feels invalidating because it’s someone telling us they’re sorry for what we feel. It shuts down curiosity and empathy.

Here’s the thing: you don’t need to *agree* with someone to understand their perspective.

When someone shares what they feel instead of deflection or getting defensive. Take a deep breath. Get genuinely curious. Try to understand what they feel by asking more questions.

This is a sign of emotional maturity.

And most importantly, don’t apologize if you aren’t sorry.

If you hear someone’s perspective and see it differently— you don’t need to apologize.

You can say “I completely see where you’re coming from.” You don’t need to push your perspective.

Healthy relationships are about respect. Not right or wrong.
