THE MANITURGIUM
One of the rites of the ordination of a priest is the anointing of the hands of the newly ordained priest with the Sacred Oil of Chrism. This is done by the ordaining bishop. The anointing signifies the priest’s consecration to the service of God and the Church.
If you have been observant during priestly ordinations, you will notice that after the anointing with the Oil of Chrism, a small, often ornate, white cloth or towel is used to wipe off the excess oil from the hands of the new priest. This cloth is called the maniturgium from the Latin “manu” for “hand” and “tergeo” for “wipe”.
Traditionally, after the ordination, the new priest offers the maniturgium to his mother as a treasured keepsake. This gesture holds deep meaning: it is said that when the mother of the priest passes away, she is buried with the maniturgium in her hands. According to tradition, when she meets God, she can present it as a testament to having given her son to the service of the Church, symbolizing her own participation in the priesthood of her son.
The practice of giving the maniturgium to the priest’s mother highlights the honor and sacrifice involved in raising a son who becomes a priest. It acknowledges the mother’s role in nurturing the faith and vocation of her child.
However, while the use of the maniturgium and its presentation to the priest’s mother remains a cherished tradition in many places, it is not universally observed. In my own case, I was not given. The practice may vary depending on local customs and the preferences of the ordained priest or the ordaining prelate.
