Yemen has become a conflict where even the suggestion of another foreign military intervention raises serious concerns.

Syria has denied plans to deploy troops, but the bigger question remains: Why does Yemen continue to attract the possibility of external military involvement?

After years of war, does the country need another foreign military presence, or a genuine political settlement that allows Yemenis to determine their own future?

How many more external actors must become involved before Yemen gets a chance at peace? We don’t know

When America says it wants peace in your region, ask one question before you celebrate.

Peace for whom?

Peace for the shipping lane that carries your resources to their markets?

Peace for the military base that sits on your soil by "mutual agreement"?

Peace for the investment climate that requires your government to remain predictable and your labor to remain cheap?

Because that peace is real. They will defend it seriously. They will send aircraft carriers to protect it.

The other kind of peace, the kind where your children are not under rubble, where your farmers can sell their crops without sanction, where your government can make its own choices without consequence...

That peace they have no particular interest in.

That peace, in fact, often requires disturbing the first kind.

And the empire has always been very clear, beneath the vocabulary, about which kind it’s willing to fight for.
