Breast cancer first. Son remembers the radiotherapy targets drawn on her. She beat that. Then it came back, she didn't want to make a fuss. By the time she was seen it was in her bones. She didn't last long after that.
Bob ran away. Bob couldn't cope. Bob was weak. Bob left the rest of the family to deal with it. Bob made his son homeless the night before he took that trip.
This picture was taken many years before she died. She out-lasted that chair. She moved house. She outlived that dog and had another for several years before the cancer returned.
If only there were flights from the USA to the UK on a frequent basis in April 2000 to facilitate Bob being in the country shortly after his mother passed, he might have been able to claim some buttons for himself.
In that position, knowing you're at the end, it's quite normal to not want to bother anyone and hope the staff attend to those with better prospects. Been there, seen it happen, been to sleep in a full hospital bay and woken up with empty beds around.
She hadn't kept all of that stuff. Had Bob been in the country to help out after she died he might have known what was kept and what wasn't. Anything superfluous was thrown away before she moved from a house to a bungalow several years before her death.
