Whilst I was shocked that my wife’s cancer surgery left us $5,000 out of pocket, the final bill has now come through.

That is the reality of a privatised healthcare system.

To those in the United Kingdom casually attacking the NHS and backing Reform UK Limited’s plans to dismantle it: understand what you are asking for. This is not abstract policy debate. This is what happens when healthcare becomes a market commodity instead of a public service.

Without insurance, that bill would have been ours alone. No safety net. No guarantee of affordability. Just life-altering debt at the worst possible moment.

Today marks 40 years since Thatcher sold off British Gas.

Remember the “Tell Sid” campaign? Turns out Sid took us all for a ride.

Thatcher called it creating a share-owning democracy. In reality, it was selling off the family silver – public assets built by generations of working people, handed over so private companies could make billions.

Forty years on, British Gas and Centrica have made obscene profits, while millions of people have struggled to keep the heating on.

That’s what happens when you run essential public utilities for private profit instead of the public good.

Energy isn’t a luxury. It should be run in the interests of the people who rely on it, not shareholders looking for bigger dividends.

Enough is enough. Time to bring our energy system back into public hands.

Jamie Corry, an Irish lad from east Belfast, has lost his home of 13 years after masked rioters set fire to cars outside and it engulfed his house in last night’s violent chaos.

He stood right there and begged one of them:

“This is my house. This is my house.”

They didn’t care.

They burned it anyway.

“They’ve done it to one of their own.”

These racist, uneducated thugs and street urchins destroy everything in their path. They don’t care who gets hurt: locals, families, their own community. Just mindless arsonists ruining innocent lives with no excuse.
