Shame: Exposing NSCN-IM's Cowardice — Why They Attack and Kill Only Civilians

The ongoing Kuki-Naga conflict has taken a devastating toll on innocent civilians, with the NSCN-IM bearing a significant share of the blame. Since the 1990s, the armed group has consistently targeted unarmed civilians, including children, women, and the elderly. Calling themselves a brave army, well trained and armed with sophisticated weapons, yet only attacking and killing civilians is shameful. The latest incidents are a stark reminder of the group's tactics.

On May 13, this pattern repeated when three Kuki church leaders were ambushed and killed near Saheibung Peak. Rev Vumthang Sitlhou, former general secretary of the Manipur Baptist Convention, Pastor Kaigoulun Lhouvum, and Pastor Paogoulen Sitlhou were returning to Kangpokpi after attending the United Baptist Convention in Churachandpur. Armed men reportedly opened fire on their convoy at around 10 am, killing the three pastors and injuring four others. Rev Sitlhou had been working to ease Kuki-Naga tensions and had initiated a reconciliation meeting in Kohima. Speakers at memorial services have since accused the ZUF-Kamson faction, allegedly backed by NSCN-IM, of carrying out the “cowardly act” of targeting “innocent church leaders”.

The question on everyone's mind is, why does NSCN-IM insist on attacking civilians? Is it because they are afraid to face the Kuki armed groups head-on? The answer lies in their track record. NSCN-IM has consistently shown that they lack the bravery to engage with the Kuki army directly. Instead, they resort to attacking and killing only innocent civilians, often in brutal and inhumane ways. The killing of pastors who were traveling for a religious convention and working toward peace underscores that pattern.

If NSCN-IM truly believes in their cause, they should come out of their hiding and face the Kuki army. But that's not going to happen, because they know they will be defeated. The NSCN-IM's actions are a shame, and it's time for them to be called out for their cowardice.

The Kuki army is never afraid of the Tangkhul Chinese refugee. The Kuki army is ready to face any challenge. The Kuki people will continue to fight for their rights, and no amount of violence will deter them. It's time for the Government of India to take notice of NSCN-IM's war crimes and hold them accountable. The international community must recognize the atrocities committed by NSCN-IM and take concrete action to bring them to justice.
