9 August 1942 | Edith Stein, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Discalced Carmelite nun OCD, patron of Europe, was murdered in a gas chamber of the German Nazi Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp.

Edith Stein was born on 12 October 1891,. She was a German Jew from Wrocław, doctor of philosophy specialising in phenomenology. A teacher of the girls’ colleges in Speyer and later in Münster. Converted to Christianity in 1922, she joined the Carmelite convent in Cologne in 1933.

With the attacks on the Jews intensifying in Germany, Sister Theresa Benedicta was moved to the Carmelite convent in Echt in the Netherlands. There she studied the works of St John of the Cross. In 1942, after protests of the Roman Catholic Church against the persecution of the Jewish citizens of the Netherlands, the German occupying powers ordered the detention of Catholic clergy of Jewish origin.

Edith Stein was arrested on 2 August 1942 and taken to Amersdoort and later to Westerbork. A few days later, a transport of 987 Jews from Westerbork was sent to Auschwitz. Their number included Edith Stein and her older sister, Rosa Stein. The transport arrived on 8 August 1942. After a selection on the ramp, both were sent to the gas chamber, where they were killed, most probably on 9 August 1942.

Pope John Paul II beatified Edith Stein in 1987, and canonised her in 1998. A year later, the nun became one of the six patron saints of Europe.

9 August 1897 | Czech Jewish woman, Pavla Seligová, was born in Litoměřice.

She was deported to #Auschwitz from #Theresienstadt ghetto on 15 December 1943. She did not survive.

8 August 1865 | Dutch Jew, Hartog Doof, was born in Amsterdam. He emigrated to Belgium.

He was deported to #Auschwitz from Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen on 18 September 1942. He was murdered in a gas chamber after arrival selection.

On this day in 1921, a Jewish woman was born in the Sudetenland. Fleeing to Prague following the German invasion, on the 16 Oct 1941, she was deported to the Łódź Ghetto. She perished in the Shoah. Her name was Margarete Franklová

In August 1942 she was deported to #Auschwitz and murdered in a gas chamber after the selection.

On this day in 1909, a Czech Jewish woman was born. On the 26 Jan 1942, she was deported to Theresienstadt with her husband and four children and on the 12 Oct 1944 to Auschwitz where they perished. Her name was Lily Arnsteinová

6 August 1931 | A Czech Jewish girl Eva Redischova was born in Prague. She was a daughter of Arnost & Elsa. On 12 September 1942 she was transferred to Theresienstadt Ghetto.

On 23 October 1944 Eva was murdered in a gas chamber at #Auschwitz II-Birkenau.
She was 13 years old.

4 August 1943 | A French Jewish girl, Marguerite Sznajderman, was born in Paris.

She arrived at #Auschwitz on 12 February 1944 in a transport of 1,500 Jews deported from Drancy. She was among 1,229 of them murdered in gas chambers after the selection. She was 6 months old.
