This post by Jenrick, who is supposed to be Shadow Justice Secretary, is particularly disgraceful.
As a lawyer, I am sure that he has in his time represented the interests of clients who he either found unpleasant or disreputable.
Maintaining the rule of law and our freedoms depends on lawyers shouldering that obligation. Without it there would be no level playing field between parties in litigation or individuals and the state. Jenrick must know this. It applies particularly to lawyers who are prepared to represent cases that need to be heard Pro Bono,without payment, because it is manifestly in the public interest that individuals should get legal representation in a court case.
His comments are a direct attack on our principles of justice and our freedoms.
Had these comments been made even six years ago by a Conservative spokesman, I would have expected any party Leader to have sacked them on the spot. Margaret Thatcher, as a lawyer, would not have allowed his feet to touch the ground as she chucked him out. Even as a backbencher he would have been told that what he had said was unacceptable.
It speaks sad volumes for the state of the Conservatives today that we appear to have silent acquiescence to his propaganda and vitriol. It may earn some votes but it destroys the "British values" that he claims as a Conservative to endorse.
