Andréia Martins grew up in Silva Jardim, beside Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.
Golden lion tamarins lived nearby, but she had never seen one. She expected to become a teacher.
Then, as a teenager, she began volunteering with a conservation project.
In 1984, she joined a team trying to return zoo-born tamarins to the wild. Every day, researchers followed radio signals through the forest, recorded family relationships and learned which animals could survive.
The first generation sometimes struggled.
Their children adapted more easily.
And Andréia stayed.

Yesterday, August 2, marked the tenth anniversary of International Golden Lion Tamarin Day.
The species had fallen to fewer than 200 animals in the wild during the 1970s. A 2023 census estimated roughly 4,800—an extraordinary recovery, although the animal remains endangered.
What most people may be missing is that there was no single miracle.
Forests were replanted.
Landowners opened their properties.
Zoo-born animals were reintroduced.
Wild tamarins were vaccinated against yellow fever.
And separated habitats were gradually reconnected.
One of the newest symbols of that work is a 20-metre-wide forested bridge over the four-lane BR-101 highway. Its tree canopy is now mature enough for tamarins, although scientists are still waiting to confirm the first crossing.
We love stories about dramatic rescues.
But most repair does not look dramatic.
Fear is loud. Progress is usually quiet.
It looks like someone returning to the same forest tomorrow—and again the day after that.
Sometimes saving the future means reconnecting what was never meant to be separated.

Imagine living through an Ice Age.
The cold is dangerous.
Food is uncertain.
Every day requires attention, cooperation and skill simply to survive.
Now imagine that, despite all of that, someone sits down with a small piece of mammoth ivory.
They begin carving.
Carefully.
Patiently.
Not a weapon.
Not a tool.
A bird.
Yesterday, researchers announced that two tiny bird figurines had been discovered in Hohle Fels Cave in southwestern Germany. They are approximately 40,000 years old and only about two centimeters long—roughly the size of a thumbnail.
One appears to be resting, perhaps brooding over eggs. The other has its wings extended, as though it might be flying, landing or displaying itself. The carvings are so detailed that researchers can see eyes, a distinctive beak and markings representing feathers.
We do not know what they meant.
Perhaps they were carried as talismans.
Perhaps they represented a group or an individual.
Perhaps they were simply expressions of fascination with the birds that filled the landscape with movement and sound.
Honest archaeology leaves room for uncertainty.
But here is what we can see clearly:
The people who made these objects were not concerned only with staying alive.
The same cultural layers at Hohle Fels have preserved figurative art, ornaments and some of the earliest-known musical instruments.
Even in an environment defined by cold, danger and scarcity, people still created.
They observed.
They imagined.
They made music.
They transformed a piece of ivory into something meaningful enough for another human being to preserve—or lose—for forty thousand years.
Technology changes quickly.
Human nature changes slowly.
We have always needed food and shelter.
But we have also always needed beauty, belonging and wonder.
Civilization may begin with survival, but it becomes human through meaning.

When Nancy Grace Roman was 11 years old, she gathered a few classmates and started an astronomy club.
They studied constellations from a book.
No giant telescope.
No advanced computer.
Just a child looking upward and deciding that the questions above her were worth exploring.
Years later, Roman became NASA’s first chief astronomer. At a time when both women in science and major space observatories faced considerable resistance, she helped persuade institutions and lawmakers to support what eventually became the Hubble Space Telescope.
Today, NASA will preview another telescope—this one carrying her name.
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled to launch on August 30. Technicians completed fueling it on July 25, loading approximately 290 gallons of hydrazine as final preparations continue at Kennedy Space Center.
Roman’s mirror is the same diameter as Hubble’s, but its field of view will be at least 100 times larger. NASA expects it to observe more than a billion galaxies while helping scientists investigate distant planets, dark matter and the still-mysterious force called dark energy.
Those possibilities are exciting.
But what fascinates me most is the length of the story.
A child forms a small astronomy club.
A scientist spends years defending an ambitious idea.
Generations of engineers build instruments whose discoveries they cannot predict.
Then, decades later, a telescope carrying her name prepares to look farther than she ever could.
The headlines tell us about launch dates.
Perspective tells us that progress often begins long before anything leaves the ground.
Of course, science offers no guarantee that Roman will answer every question. Launches may be delayed, instruments have limitations, and unexpected findings can challenge the theories we hoped to confirm.
But that is not a weakness.
That is how honest discovery works.
The future often begins when someone decides a question is worth building for.

Imagine standing beside the Baltic Sea a century ago.
Behind you is a small fishing village.
In front of you is mostly open land, cold wind and water.
Someone unfolds a set of plans and says:
“We’re going to build a city here.”
Not repair one.
Not expand one.
Build one.
Today, UNESCO added the Modernist City Centre of Gdynia, Poland, to its World Heritage List. The recognition arrives during Gdynia’s centenary year. In 1920, the village had about 1,200 residents. By 1939, its population had grown roughly one hundredfold as people arrived looking for work, opportunity and a fresh beginning.
Its architects created streamlined buildings with rounded corners, long windows and balconies resembling ocean liners—architecture shaped by the city’s relationship with the sea and by an era that believed technology could improve everyday life.
But the story was not perfect.
Rapid development created severe pressure on housing. Behind the elegant public buildings were poorer communities living without enough affordable homes. Ambition built the city, but ambition did not distribute its benefits equally.
That complexity matters.
Perspective does not require us to turn history into a fairy tale. It asks us to appreciate what people accomplished while learning from what they neglected.
And perhaps that is the deeper meaning of today’s recognition.
We often think heritage belongs only to ancient temples, castles and monuments.
But Gdynia reminds us that heritage can begin with a blueprint, a difficult decision and people willing to build something they may never see completed.
Every bridge, school, neighborhood, company and institution begins as an unfinished experiment.
The future becomes history one ordinary working day at a time.

Have you ever noticed how one quiet moment can matter more than a hundred loud ones?
Imagine a family living close enough to a conflict that the sound of aircraft has become part of the night.
Then, one evening, the sky is quiet.
Nothing has been solved.
But for the first time in days, someone sleeps.
As of this morning, the United States has paused its airstrikes against Iran after nearly two weeks of escalating attacks. Diplomatic discussions are moving forward, including efforts to restore an interim ceasefire and address shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
It would be easy to call this peace.
It isn’t.
The U.S. naval blockade remains. Fighting and attacks continue elsewhere in the region, including strikes involving Iran-aligned Houthi forces and Saudi Arabia. Deep mistrust and the underlying political disputes have not disappeared.
But here is what the headline may miss:
Diplomacy rarely begins because opposing sides suddenly understand or forgive each other.
It often begins because both recognize that continuing on the same path could become unbearable.
A pause creates something conflict destroys: time.
Time for mediators to carry messages.
Time for leaders to reconsider assumptions.
Time for civilians to breathe.
Time to discover whether the person described as an enemy may still be capable of making a deal.
The United Nations describes ceasefires as arrangements that can become a foundation for more comprehensive negotiations. They are fragile, imperfect and sometimes exploited—but they can create the first space in which something better becomes possible.
Optimism does not mean assuming this pause will hold.
It means understanding that history can turn on moments when people choose conversation over the next attack.
Perspective isn’t about changing your opinion. It’s about seeing enough of the picture to make a better one.

The United States has now recorded 2,318 confirmed measles cases in 2026—more than during all of last year and the highest annual number in 35 years.
That is serious news.
Measles can spread quickly, particularly through communities where vaccination levels have fallen. Children are especially vulnerable, and some patients require hospitalization. We should not minimize that reality.
But fear is not the whole picture.
Unlike many of the problems dominating today’s headlines, measles does not require us to wait for a revolutionary invention. We already possess an extraordinarily effective prevention tool.
One dose of the MMR vaccine is approximately 93% effective against measles. Two doses are approximately 97% effective.
And we know that large-scale progress is possible because we have already achieved it.
In 2000, measles was declared eliminated from the United States, meaning continuous domestic transmission had been interrupted for more than 12 months. That achievement came through widespread vaccination and strong disease-control programs.
So today’s numbers are not evidence that public health is powerless.
They are evidence that progress must be maintained.
Vaccines alone are not enough. Families need access to healthcare. Parents deserve respectful answers to honest questions. Doctors and public-health officials must communicate clearly, identify cases quickly and rebuild trust where it has been damaged.
That work is slower and less dramatic than announcing a new scientific discovery.
But it works.
Perspective isn’t about changing your opinion. It’s about seeing enough of the picture to make a better one.
The measles resurgence is a warning—but it is also a reminder.
Human beings have already solved much of this problem once. We do not need panic or resignation.
We need the patience and determination to do again what history has shown is possible.

Key news: On July 23, China announced a five-year plan requiring wind and solar generation to increase by 53%. Reuters reports that this is the first time China has made such a renewable-generation target legally binding.
What people may be missing: Energy transitions rarely happen through one dramatic breakthrough. They happen through thousands of power plants, transmission lines, batteries, policy decisions and engineering improvements.
Balanced perspective: China still relies heavily on coal, and its rapid renewable expansion has outpaced parts of its electrical grid. Storage, transmission and reliability remain substantial challenges.
Hopeful but realistic takeaway: The climate challenge is far from solved, but the machinery needed to address it is no longer theoretical. It is being built at an enormous scale.

On July 22, the United States announced a major expansion of its “AI for science” effort: roughly $5 billion across 15 federal agencies, together with nearly 300 Department of Energy projects and more than $800 million in partner commitments. The stated goals include accelerating drug discovery, improving materials and energy research, and using national-laboratory supercomputers and specialized datasets to shorten the journey from question to experiment.
Most AI headlines focus on chatbots, job losses, deepfakes or which company has the most powerful model.
Those concerns are real. But they can hide a quieter shift:
AI is becoming part of the scientific method itself.
That does not mean a machine suddenly becomes a scientist. AI can search enormous numbers of possibilities, identify promising patterns and help researchers decide which experiments to try next.
Human scientists must still ask the right questions, challenge errors, test the results and decide what should—or should not—be built.
There are legitimate reasons for caution. Public money requires transparent oversight. Health and government data need strong privacy protections. Scientific findings must be reproducible, not merely impressive. Faster discovery is also not automatically fair discovery; its benefits could remain concentrated among a small number of institutions or companies.
But here is the perspective worth holding:
The same technology frequently described only as a threat may also help us address chronic disease, build stronger infrastructure, improve energy systems and discover materials we have not yet imagined.
Optimism is not believing every promise.
It is recognizing possibility while demanding responsibility.
Perspective isn’t about changing your opinion. It’s about seeing enough of the picture to make a better one.
The important question is no longer simply, “Will AI change science?”
It is:
“What rules, values and human judgment will guide that change?”

Good evening. Before you believe today's headlines, let's step back for just a minute...
Every morning, millions of us wake up and scroll through headlines. Within minutes, we're told the economy is collapsing, technology is replacing us, the world is more divided than ever, and tomorrow looks darker than today.
Some of those stories describe real problems. They deserve our attention.
But here's what headlines rarely give us: perspective.
Headlines are designed to tell us what happened. They don't always explain why it happened, how it compares with history, what progress is also taking place, or what opportunities might exist alongside the challenges.
That's why I'm starting this daily conversation.
Not to tell you what to think.
Not to convince you to agree with me.
But to help all of us—including me—pause long enough to ask better questions.
Because when we zoom out, something interesting happens.
We discover that history is full of difficult moments that people believed would never end. Yet generation after generation found ways to innovate, adapt, rebuild, and move forward.
The world isn't perfect.
It never has been.
But neither is it hopeless.
Every day there are scientists solving problems, teachers changing lives, entrepreneurs creating opportunities, neighbors helping neighbors, and ordinary people doing extraordinary things that never become front-page news.
Those stories matter too.
That's the picture I want us to see together.
From now on, every morning we'll take one story from the news and ask a few simple questions:
What really happened?
What are people saying?
What might we be missing?
What does history teach us?
And what can we do with that knowledge?
Because perspective isn't about changing your opinion.

🧵 We've been building microservices wrong for years. HTTP/3 + QUIC + SPIFFE just rewrote my mental model. Here's what every builder needs to understand:
1/ TCP is 50 years old. We've been patching it forever. HTTP/2 gave us stream multiplexing — but one dropped packet still froze EVERY stream. That's Head-of-Line blocking. We never actually fixed it. QUIC does.
2/ QUIC runs over UDP and rebuilds reliable transport from scratch. Lost packet? Only that stream stalls. Everything else keeps moving. This isn't an optimization — it's a different category of protocol.
3/ The latency gains are real. QUIC bakes TLS 1.3 directly into the handshake. 1-RTT on first connect. 0-RTT on resume. On mobile networks with 100ms RTT, you're saving 200-300ms per connection. At scale that compounds fast.
4/ Connection migration alone is worth the switch. TCP dies when your IP changes (Wi-Fi → LTE). QUIC uses Connection IDs — the session survives a network switch transparently. No reconnect. No dropped streams. No user-facing failure.
5/ Now layer SPIFFE on top and things get wild. SPIFFE gives every workload a cryptographic identity — an X.509 cert, not a secret. No client secrets to rotate. No token endpoints to call. No bearer tokens to steal.
6/ Since QUIC has TLS 1.3 native, mTLS is zero extra overhead. Service A and Service B mutually authenticate *inside the QUIC handshake*. Identity IS the connection. One round trip. Done.
7/ What you actually eliminate:
— OAuth token management for S2S auth
— Auth server as a synchronous dependency
— Secret rotation pipelines
— Token refresh logic in every service
— Separate TLS + auth layers
8/ What you get instead: short-lived certs auto-rotated by the SPIRE agent locally. Private keys never leave memory. Authorization policies consume SPIFFE IDs directly from the cert. No token parsing. No middleware.
9/ The stack I'm converging on: HTTP/3 + QUIC at the transport, SPIFFE/SPIRE for workload identity, Envoy or Cilium for policy enforcement on SPIFFE IDs. Zero-trust by default — not bolted on.
10/ TCP + OAuth were built for a different era. Builders still treating them as defaults are carrying technical debt they don't have to carry. The new stack is production-ready. Time to move.

Combined honest update on two of the weaker claims in the thread:
1) On BeiDou "migration" — selective integration is the better word. Iranian systems have BDS receivers across multiple platforms, but a clean architectural transition isn't documented. The strategic implication holds either way: enough BDS-guided inventory exists that GPS denial no longer neutralizes the threat.
2) On YC8B tracking F-35s — the capability is in country, specific engagement claims during Epic Fury are reported but not independently verified at the operational data level.
What survives both caveats: U.S. air superiority and GPS dominance can no longer be assumed by default. The exact percentages and engagement data are intelligence questions. The strategic shift is the story.
