Mark Carney has quietly rebuilt how Canada's government actually works, and sidelined almost everyone who used to run it.
A Toronto Star investigation finds cabinet, Parliament, the civil service and the press have all been pushed to the margins in favour of a small circle around the prime minister. 🧵👇 (1/8)
“Who is the economy working for?”
This article about Brookfield deserves serious attention. The company has extensive interests in Canada’s infrastructure, energy and real estate. Mark Carney formerly held a senior role there, and Canadians are entitled to more than vague assurances about how potential conflicts are being managed.
But are we missing the bigger picture by talking only about Carney’s personal conflict of interest?
Who owns and controls the infrastructure Canadians depend on? How is public money being used, who stands to benefit, and what does this mean for Canada’s long-term economic security?
Those questions deserve clear answers. Public trust depends on Canadians being able to see the decisions, the financial interests and the safeguards for themselves.
If public money is being used to support private investment, the government should be able to show exactly who benefits and why it serves the public interest. Asking those questions is basic accountability.
Read the article and make up your own mind.
Conservative leader @PierrePoilievre casually speaking to Canadians on Porter Airlines. A regular seat, talking to everyday Canadians. A man of the people.
Is it a paid position?
@grok is the position a paid position, or will Carney's wife be entitled to benefits, deductions or other perks / expense reimbursements from the position?
Ottawa is paying TMU, Laval and Concordia to build a list of "trustworthy" local news so Heritage Canada can decide who gets policy support
Peter Menzies @Pagmenzies : "I told you so" —once you take the subsidies, the government wants a roster. Drip by drip, media become infrastructure. The job is to hold power to account—not sit on its approved list
Tara Henley @TaraRHenley: government and academics who already lost public trust shouldn’t pick who’s reliable. Journalists told the 1980 newspaper commission to get out of the newsrooms. "Get the hell out of our newsrooms." That still holds
Great reporters who annoy Ottawa won’t make the cut.

Progress Toronto executive director Saman Tabasinejad arrives by bicycle to a mayoral debate featuring the organization’s preferred candidate, incumbent Olivia Chow.
Tabasinejad previously held a leadership role with the Iranian Canadian Congress (ICC).
Both Progress Toronto and ICC are involved in the protest circuit, including demonstrations intended to disrupt “business as usual.”
But recording a public figure on a public sidewalk is apparently a step too far.

The tag team of Mark Warner (@MAAWLAW) & Moshe Lander smack down Mark Carney's EU associate membership PR stunt.
1⃣ Both 🇨🇦 & the EU are trying to make their ex's (the 🇺🇸 & 🇬🇧) jealous. Brilliant. 😁
2⃣ On trade, 🇨🇦 is too small to matter to the EU without US market access.
3⃣ The EU doesn't like supply mgmt either. It's one of the reasons 10 countries haven't ratified CETA (🇨🇦-🇪🇺 free trade agreement).
4⃣ Doubtful the stunt will make any difference. If you think dealing with the US on trade is tough, you ain't seen nothing yet when it comes to the 🇪🇺.
I can’t wait to see how ProgressTO, who has been desperately trying (and failing) to persuade Torontonians that Brad was mini-DoFo, will explain away @OliviaChow being endorsed by Premier Doug Ford.
