Is AI Art killing artists?

Many AI "experts" are displaying banners that read "RIP graphic designers." Numerous artists are claiming AI is stealing their work.

This debate will soon play out in the courtroom.

What’s your take on this? Below is a short essay I’ve written on the topic.

Art has perennially been woven into the fabric of human civilization, acting as a conduit for emotion, introspection, and dialogue. As time has progressed, myriad tools and innovations have evolved the realm of artistic creation. Now, with the emergence of AI-driven artistry, we're witnessing a new era. This nascent domain, brimming with potential and hurdles, is revolutionizing not just the artistic community, but also our very interaction and understanding of art.

Like many, I once viewed art through a limited lens, with my understanding confined to the boundaries of a high school art course. I had never truly considered myself an artist, nor did I grasp the depth and breadth of artistic expression. However, the rise of AI and platforms like Midjourney has dramatically altered my perspective. These advancements have not only deepened my appreciation for art but have also empowered me to channel my emotions into artistic expressions in ways I had never deemed conceivable.

Before AI’s influence began permeating the art scene, there was a prevailing notion that art was an exclusive domain. It was often perceived as a luxury, cherished predominantly by the affluent, or a skill possessed only by those naturally endowed with the ability to create. I, too, was ensnared by this misconception, naively equating “art” to a term brandished by the elite to showcase their opulence.

Yet, the emergence of AI art is democratizing this space. It beckons a pertinent question to all artists: don’t you yearn for your art to resonate with a more diverse audience, for more people to fathom and relish your distinctive style? AI art serves as a bridge in this context. It transcends traditional barriers, making art more accessible and allowing individuals like me to immerse themselves in the creative process. AI isn’t merely a tool in this paradigm; it metamorphoses into a medium, a canvas that amplifies human creativity.

Envisioning the trajectory of this synergy, I foresee a future where the boundaries between artists and AI become increasingly porous. This doesn’t imply the obsolescence of human artists. Instead, it signifies a symbiotic relationship where both entities rely on each other, leveraging their unique strengths to augment artistic capabilities.

In conclusion, the fear that AI art might overshadow or replace traditional art forms is unwarranted. AI is here to complement, to enrich, and to expand the horizons of what we deem possible in the realm of art. The canvas of the future is vast and inclusive, promising a tapestry woven from the threads of human creativity and AI innovation.
