Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life.
I have spent my entire adult life with young people—including seven-and-a-half years as president of BYU-Idaho.
Susan and I are beyond thrilled to participate in activities this week at the university as we commemorate the 25th anniversary of this remarkable institution of higher education.
You students at BYU-I (@byuidaho) and our other young members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are wonderful disciples of the Savior. Please do not be too hard on yourselves.
Be worthy. Be available.
Put the Lord first and all the other parts of life will fall into place.
The cool thing about this document is that there is no expiration date on the parental roles and it explicitly says “extended families should lend support when needed”.
I think this is just as important as having mothers in the home. We should work on healthy relationships that enable extended family connections and support.
President Oaks two days ago:
We live in the day foretold when righteousness is sent forth out of heaven and truth out of the earth “to sweep the earth as with a flood, [and] to gather out [the] elect from the four quarters of the earth.”
I have learned that when a prophet of he Lord announces that a prophecy has been fulfilled or is being fulfilled, we should perk up our ears and pay attention.
This is the prophecy he was referring to, per his own footnote:
Moses 7:62
“62 And righteousness will I send down out of heaven; and truth will I send forth out of the earth, to bear testimony of mine Only Begotten; his resurrection from the dead; yea, and also the resurrection of all men; and righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep the earth as with a flood, to gather out mine elect from the four quarters of the earth, unto a place which I shall prepare, an Holy City, that my people may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem.”
President Oaks is preparing us to build Zion.
"Pour out your souls in your closets, and your secret places. ... Yea, and when you do not cry unto the Lord, let your hearts be full, drawn out in prayer unto him continually ."
–Alma 34:26–27
We usually imagine rescue as someone strong enough to destroy whatever is hurting us.
A warrior.
A king.
A conqueror.
That is what many expected the Messiah to be.
But Isaiah saw something different.
“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.”
The Savior of the world would not arrive looking powerful.
He would be mocked.
Wounded.
Rejected.
And led “as a lamb to the slaughter.”
He would not stand outside human suffering and command it to disappear.
He would enter it.
He would carry our grief.
Our sorrow.
Our sin.
And then He would carry the cross.
To anyone watching, it looked like defeat.
But Christ was defeating something far greater than an earthly enemy.
Sin.
Death.
And everything that separates us from God.
The world expected a conqueror.
God sent a Lamb.
And the Lamb conquered everything.
One thing that has stirred me to want to listen to, and follow our living prophets over the years is the thought of how awful it would be, when calamity hits, to ever be in a position of “I wish we would have listened!”
In 3 Nephi 8, as the darkness and destruction was covering the earth,
“In one place they were heard to cry, saying: O that we had repented before this great and terrible day, and then would our brethren have been spared!”
O that we would have repented!
I wish we would have listened!
Right after that, in chapter 10, the Lord gives the famous “I tried to warn you, I tried to help you” verses.
I can only imagine that in Noah’s day, those same cries would have been heard…. O that we we would have repented… WHY didn’t we listen??
We DO have living prophets on the earth today, standing in place of the Savior, and they are calling to us. Will we heed the call?
We can start today, to dive deep into the words we heard this weekend. To do our best to follow what Jesus Christ is asking us to do.
To help us prepare.
To help us be ready.
To help us avoid EVER having to say “I wish I would have listened.”
There is nothing on this earth that can compare to the peace and JOY Jesus Christ offers us! But it is up to us to reach out and accept what He is SO FREELY offering.
District conference today in Pakistan. Yes, it is different, but absolutely true! The people and the conference venues are beautiful!
One family, not members, traveled 6 hours! They are an amazing family thirsting for the restored gospel.
Urdu translations happening now, so we will watch General Conference next Sunday!
Following where the prophets and apostles have been trying to lead us ever since the April 2020 General Conference has blessed my life in more ways than I could EVER have seen coming at the time.
In my VERY limited vision, I was just accepting another one of President Nelson’s invitations, but that one decision has changed the course of my life.
President Nelson asked us to spiritually prepare for that session of conference, and I did my best to do just that. He promised that if we did prepare, the conference would be memorable... even unforgettable for us. And it was.
That conference became a hinge-point in my own life, and I have never looked back.
When President Nelson began his presidency, it felt different to me. It felt as if the ground had shifted, as if the game plan had changed-- it felt like we were headed in a new direction— like we were at the beginning of an exciting journey!
This impression never left me, and I was excited to accept every single invitation that came our way from President Nelson—and there were so many!
More than ever before in my lifetime we were receiving very specific warnings, invitations, and promises—at a pace that was difficult to keep up with! But I did my best.
His use of the words “I urge you” and “I plead with you” got my attention— the sense of urgency could not be missed.
One thing President Nelson said as he issued this special invitation to us was this:
"Immerse yourself in the glorious LIGHT OF THE RESTORATION." It was that session in which he delivered his famous "Hear Him" talk-- the one that set me on a new course.
A course that would help me LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND, and focus my time and attention on the things of God.
A course that would remove any worry of what was happening in the world around me, and bring a sense of peace, knowing that as we move closer to God, ALL will be well with us, regardless of what may be happening in the crumbling world around us.
During those sessions of the April 2020 conference, they didn't say anything "exciting", or even "new".
There were no clear-cut directions about anything changing.
And yet, EVERYTHING changed!
What that conference did was start to teach us how to rise above the things of the world… how to leave the world behind, and enter into a world surrounded by the POWER and LIGHT of Jesus Christ.
How to create a world where He can "dwell in our midst" no matter where we are, or what we are asked to do.
How to create our own sacred spaces... in our homes and in our lives— places of "refuge from the storms".
I will NEVER forget the April 2020 General Conference. It DID start a spiritual journey for me, and I will be forever grateful for an invitation that was extended to us from a living prophet of God on the earth!
Ever since then, I listen to General Conference with different “ears” than I previously did.
The most important questions for me have become--
How are they asking us to raise ourselves to a higher plane?
How are they asking us to leave the world behind?
These two questions have served me well during the past six years... the direction they are taking us could not be more clear.
My personal relationship with Jesus Christ has become the TOP priority in my life, and it has made ALL the difference.
They truly ARE prophets! They are leading us exactly where Heavenly Father wants to take us— to a place of safety and protection, a place of peace and happiness, a place where God can dwell in our midst. HERE, and NOW!
I have such a strong testimony of the blessings that come into our lives as we make a conscious effort to follow where our prophets are leading us! I have tested this gospel again and again, and it has never failed me, not even once.
"IMMERSE yourself in the LIGHT of the restoration." What a glorious invitation!
Jesus Christ is inviting us to surround ourselves with HIS LIGHT and POWER!
Indeed, THE HEAVENS ARE OPEN, and He IS pouring out His Spirit.
We are SO BLESSED!
Book of Mormon reading this morning…
Helaman 13:19-24, 26 & 39
Samuel the Lamanite continues to preach:
“O ye people of the land, that ye would hear my words! And I pray that the anger of the Lord be turned away from you, and that ye would repent and be saved.”

“Softly and tenderly, Jesus is calling…Come home! Come home! Ye who are weary, come home! Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling—Calling, O sinner, come home!”
For five years I sat in an office every Sunday while people came in to confess the worst things they'd done. I was barely 30.
I served as a bishop in my church, leading a congregation of about 500 people. Part of that role is what we call being a common judge, which is where the confessions came in.
Early on I would leave the lights off, lock the door, and kneel in the dark, praying. How could I possibly judge these people, with so many of them being more than twice my age?
Then one morning I caught sight of a picture of Christ on the wall, and it occurred to me that he would not have been judging any of them. He would have just listened, and pointed them toward healing.
So I flipped the lights on and changed my title. Instead of judge, I decided I was a repentance coach. I had never heard another bishop call himself that, but it felt right.
What I saw over those five years changed how I see people permanently. A wealthy businessman and a struggling single mother would come in on the same afternoon carrying roughly the same wound.
It shocked me how many quiet crises people carry. Unimaginable amounts of guilt, regret, and sorrow.
I would come home in emotional shock, and my wife would hold me while I tried to process it all.
But I’m grateful for that soul-stretching experience. It taught me about how important compassion is, and why we shouldn’t make assumptions.
Whoever you’re mad or annoyed at today - cut them a break. They likely need it worse than you know.
“And the world, because of their iniquity, shall judge him to be a thing of naught wherefore they scourge him, and he suffereth it and they smite him, and he suffereth it, they spit upon him, and he suffereth it, because of his loving kindness and his longsuffering towards them.”
Sister Nelson. Such a baller. Listened to this devotional again today. 🔥 Catch the vision of who you are, and realize where/when we are living. Nothing compares in importance.
“The only thing that really matters is that you and I are doing exactly what we committed— even covenanted— premortally with our Heavenly Father we WOULD do while we are here on earth.
I believe if you could see yourself living with your Heavenly Parents and with Jesus Christ; if you could observe what you did premortally and see yourself making commitments— even covenants—with others.
if you could see yourself courageously responding to attacks on truth and valiantly standing up for Jesus Christ, I believe that every one of you would have the increased POWER, increased COMMITMENT, and eternal PERSPECTIVE to help you overcome any and all of your confusion, doubts, struggles, and problems.
ALL of them!
I believe if you could remember who you said you would help while you are here on earth, or what anguishing experiences you agreed to go through, that whatever really tough situation you are presently in— or will be in— you would say, “Oh, now I remember. Now I understand. This difficult situation makes sense to me now. With the Lord’s help I can do this!”

Hope of Israel; June 2018
During President Nelson’s time as the prophet, there were several themes that came up again and again. He often framed them as SPIRITUAL warnings rather than predictions of specific disasters.
DO NOT TAKE YOUR TESTIMONY FOR GRANTED.
He warned members that they can’t simply rely on someone else’s testimony, urged them to “take charge” of their own testimony: work for it, nourish it, and feed it truth. He specifically warned against allowing false philosophies to weaken it.
DO NOT EXPECT TO SURVIVE SPIRITUALLY WITHOUT THE HOLY GHOST.
He warned that “in coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without” the constant influence of the Holy Ghost. This was connected to the enormous volume of competing voices, philosophies, information and social-media messages confronting people.
DO NOT LET THE WORLD DROWN OUT REVELATION.
He repeatedly warned about confusing the “voices” of the world with the voice of God and taught members to develop their ability to receive personal revelation.
He emphasized that information should be evaluated carefully, including considering the source and its motivations.
DO NOT LET POLITICAL, CULTURAL, OR OTHER IDENTITIES REPLACE YOUR ETERNAL IDENTITY.
He specifically pleaded with young adults not to replace the three identities he identified as fundamental: a child of God, a child of the covenant, and a disciple of Jesus Christ.
DO NOT ABANDON THE COVENANT PATH.
From the beginning of his presidency, Nelson repeatedly warned members about drifting away from covenants and urged them to remain on the covenant path. He said, “I urge you to get on the covenant path and stay there."
DO NOT NEGLECT REPENTANCE.
He pleaded with members to experience the strengthening power of daily repentance—continually doing and becoming a little better.
DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE ADVERSARY'S INCREASING INFLUENCE.
He explicitly taught that “the assaults of the adversary are increasing exponentially, in intensity and in variety.”
He connected this warning to the need for greater spiritual protection, particularly through temple worship and covenants.
DO NOT NEGLECT THE TEMPLE.
He warned that the world’s increasing spiritual pressures made temple worship more—not less—important. He said, “Our need to be in the temple on a regular basis has never been greater.”
DO NOT BECOME SPIRITUALLY COMPLACENT BECAUSE OF DIFICULT TIMES.
He frequently spoke about the increasingly challenging spiritual environment in which Church members would live. His answer wasn’t to retreat in fear, but to increase faith, revelation, covenant keeping, temple worship and reliance on Jesus Christ."
BE PREPARED FOR THE SECOND COMING.
This became increasingly prominent in his later presidency. He taught that temple worship, covenants and spiritual preparation would help members prepare for the Savior’s return.
Looking across Nelson’s presidency, his warnings seem to become increasingly focused on SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT.
There is an important distinction: Nelson generally didn’t present these as warnings that Church members should panic about particular POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, or GEOPOLITICAL events.
His recurring warning was that the world would become increasingly SPIRITUALLY CONFUSING and that disciples would need greater personal revelation and spiritual strength to navigate it.
One thing that stands out is that his warnings were remarkable consistent.
He repeatedly warned that the SPIRITUAL ENVIRONMENT would become more difficult and that members would need:
Personal Revelation.
The Holy Ghost.
Covenants.
Temple Worship.
Discernment.
and
A FIRM Relationship with Jesus Christ.
(grok summary of Pres. Nelson’s priorities)
We CANNOT underestimate the adversary! Without the help of Jesus Christ, we are no match for him.
Greater personal revelation.
Greater spiritual strength.
“I PLEAD with you to increase your spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”
