When we visited Bhansuli village in Kotpad, we noticed a peculiar custom. The women of this community each have a pet chicken, these are reared for chicken fights…with the women taking the winnings!

Mirgan community relies on the aal tree for dyeing of yarn used for Kotpad handloom. A small portion of their roots is taken and ground into fine powder for the dyebath.

The Kotpad Weavers Cooperative Society was founded in 1956.

Men of the Mirgan community are traditionally the weavers, while women use natural dyes to create striking colours for this textile.

The town of Kotpad lies nestled amongst lush forests in Odisha. The handloom fabric specific to this locale - also called 'Kotpad’ is the first item in the state, to have received the Geographical Indication of India tag back in 2005.

A cosy little town in Odisha’s southern Koraput district - Kotpad is home to the Mirgan community. The town lends its name to its most celebrated export since generations- Kotpad handloom.
