The Odyssey, and here is why it didn't click for me:
The main issue isn't the plot or the acting. It's that the scale of this adaptation completely fails to match the scale of the source material.
1. Odysseus has no real character arc.
Right from the start, he already seems exhausted and broken. You don't feel his journey from a cocky hero who dares to challenge the gods to a changed man who has survived immense loss. To me, that transformation should be the heart of the story.
2. The whole journey feels way too repetitive.
The islands, monsters, and mythical places all look practically identical. Almost everything is shot in the same dull, cold, gray-blue color palette. Because of this, you never get the sense that Odysseus is traveling through distinct mythical worlds or different stages of life.
3. Some design choices completely break the immersion.
The Trojan Horse looks like a flawless piece of high-end engineering, even though the story dictates it was hastily thrown together from timber and shipwreck scraps. Agamemnon’s black plastic armor feels more like modern fantasy or a comic book than the world the movie is trying to build. On top of that, the film never explains why these specific elements clash so hard with the otherwise basic, low-key visual style.
4. The anti-war message is way too on-the-nose.
The Odyssey is already one of the greatest anti-war stories ever told, but it works because it shows the cost of war through the hero's fate. This movie, however, spells out its thesis almost immediately: war is terrible, people are cruel, and violence destroys everyone. As a result, the audience doesn't reach this conclusion alongside Odysseus—we are just told what to think right from the jump.
5. The backlash over "wrong casting" is a total non-issue.
Personally, the actors' race didn't impact my viewing experience at all. If a movie works structurally and dramatically, you stop noticing that stuff pretty quickly. The real issues here are on a completely different level.
The Verdict:
I'd give it a 5/10. The score is solid, the acting is decent, and there are a few memorable scenes (the Cyclops, the Sirens, the pigs). But when it comes to one of the greatest stories in human history, I expected a true sense of an epic journey—where the world changes, the hero changes, and the audience changes with him. That just didn't happen for me. It’s a fine popcorn flick for a random evening, but it’s definitely not a definitive adaptation that will stick around or become a classic.

Watched Nolan’s leaked Odyssey film and it’s so much worse than you can imagine. I expected it to at least be a well made film, but instead is very difficult to get through. This isn’t even a fun ride like Batman or Inception.

1. The dialogue is absolutely terrible and breaks immersion. American street slang and colloquialisms are shocking to hear in a film set in antiquity. I feel like I’m watching an SNL skit.

2. Scene cuts are absolutely terrible and unexpected. It seems like burning through the expensive 70mm film intimidated all the actors and even the director.

3. Scenes just seem so imperfect. Dialogue rushed, 3rd wall unintentionally broken by stupid lines every other scene.

4. Random black or ethnic faces are jarring and break immersion.

5. Anne Hathaway, whose milkers were enjoyed by all on the red carpet, acts terribly in the film, like some teenager acting for the first time.

6. They have Penelope say stupid dishonorable lines like that she, Odysseus, and Telemachus should flee their kingdom and Agamemnon so Odysseus doesn’t have to go to war.

7. No large historical battles on Troy showcasing heroes and siege. No shining armor or spears under the Mediterranean sun, arrow volleys, etc.

8. No feast or revelry after Troy is captured. Somehow they leave angry instead of victorious and with full bellies. They feel too guilty to take provisions from Troy but they’re ok raiding additional villages on the way home… what?

9. Everything is so dark. The beauty of the Aegean is sometimes showcased, but it never lasts long enough, and so much happens during the night or by fire light that 70mm film seems wasted or limiting.

10. All the gods, nymphs etc look like vagrants wearing clothes form H&M rather than ethereal beings. ZERO AURA

Nobody will remember this film even if it makes money. I’m in disbelief of how terrible it is.

Во норм. држава за ова за 5 мин доаѓа полиција. Само ми се потврдува одлуката да се иселам и никогаш да не се вратам у таа вукојебина.
