🏅Iryna Zemlyana, a media expert at the Institute of Mass Information who is being politically persecuted by Russia, has been awarded the Order of Merit, 3rd Class.
This is set out in Presidential Decree No. 532/2026, issued to mark Ukraine’s Constitution Day.
Iryna was honoured for “significant contributions to strengthening Ukrainian statehood, the courage and dedication she demonstrated in defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, her substantial personal contribution to the development of various spheres of public life, and her conscientious fulfilment of her professional duties”.
👉Russian persecution of Iryna Zemlyana
In March 2026, a Russian court sentenced Iryna Zemlyana in absentia to 13 years’ imprisonment on false charges of attacking the Russian ambassador to Poland in 2022. Zemlyana was also charged with promoting “fake news” for two social media posts about the Russian troops’ crimes in Ukraine she made in 2022–2024. Iryna Zemlyana stated that the verdict was politically motivated and part of a campaign of pressure, and that the case had been entirely fabricated.
On 9 May 2022, Iryna Zemlyana attended a protest in Warsaw at the monument to Soviet soldiers, where a Russian delegation led by the ambassador laid flowers to mark the so-called Victory Day.
Ukrainians planned to pour red paint on themselves in front of the delegation. During the scuffle, someone splashed the ambassador. Since Iryna was the only person identified at the protest, the Russians opened a criminal case and submitted a request to Interpol to detain her.
Putin's head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, recorded a video in which he promised that ‘he would not let this go.’ Iryna began receiving tens of thousands of threats from Russians and their trolls. As a result, she left Poland and has been forced to go into hiding ever since.
Poland also launched an investigation into the “attack” on the Russian ambassador. In June 2023, it became known that the Polish prosecutor's office had suspended the investigation, finding Iryna not guilty.
At the same time, Interpol has yet to decide whether to issue an international arrest warrant for Zemlyana at Russia's request. In February 2024, Russia added Iryna to its list of “terrorists and extremists”.
Iryna Zemlyana said that the ruling was political and passed part of a pressure campaign targeting journalists, activists, and Ukrainians in general.

A drone detector is the new must-have piece of kit for frontline reporting.
The closer you get to the front line in Ukraine, the more deadly Russian drones of all kinds there are. Because of this, journalists are now filming the war far less. But if you have a drone detector, your chances of escaping an FPV drone are slightly higher — it gives you time to react.
Documentary photographer Viacheslav Ratynskyi shared his thoughts and experience in an article for the Institute of Mass Information.
He said that western news outlets regard drone detectors with suspicion and view them as weapons that would put journalists on par with combatants.
But the world has changed, the war has changed, so the rules governing journalists’ work must also change for the sake of everyone’s safety.
#Russia: RSF condemns the unjust 13-year prison sentence handed down in absentia to Ukrainian journalist Iryna Zemlyana. Among other charges, she was found guilty of spreading alleged “false information” about the Russian invasion of Ukraine — but reporting is not a crime.
