On that day, General Gordon Granger marched into Galveston, Texas, with 2,000 Union troops, and the freedom that had been proclaimed became a reality. June 19 is a day to celebrate and commemorate the end of slavery in the United States of America.

June 19, 1865, was the final day of enslavement for more than 250,000 African Americans. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued two and a half years prior, it had not taken effect in areas still under Confederate control.
