Half a million Poles served in the Wehrmacht during World War II, and at least 200,000 of them died fighting for the Third Reich, historian Ryszard Kaczmarek estimated in his 2010 book "Poles in the Wehrmacht."

Estimating the number of Poles serving in the Wehrmacht proved very difficult. Kaczmarek relied on German sources, but Polish soldiers who joined the Wehrmacht from the Deutsche Volksliste DVL (German Nationality List) were treated as Germans in documents. Available materials do not provide a complete count. By the end of the war, the Polish resistance movement estimated that as many as 450,000 Polish citizens had fought on the German side.

"This estimate is close to the truth - about 250,000 Poles from Upper Silesia served in the Wehrmacht, and about 200,000 from Pomerania. This would give 450-500,000 Polish soldiers in the Wehrmacht. This means that every tenth Upper Silesian served in the German army," wrote the historian.

The most common reason Poles joined the Third Reich was the obligation to sign the Volksliste. Often, this was independent of a person's sense of nationality. For example, in Upper Silesia, they were required to complete a questionnaire, which served as the basis for the Volksliste. It included questions about family, attendance at a German school, and activities in Polish organizations before the war. The completed questionnaire was then sent to a German official, who classified the individual into a specific Volksliste group. Initially, only individuals in the first two Volksliste groups, and from 1942 also those in the third group, automatically became German citizens, which meant compulsory military service. Refusal to do so could result in being accused of desertion and sentenced to death, and their family members were also subject to repression.

Poles in the Wehrmacht were treated as second-class soldiers. Many didn't even speak German and were barred from promotion. The Wehrmacht's policy of limited trust in Polish recruits proved prudent from the German perspective – of the 450,000 Poles in the Wehrmacht, as many as 83,000 deserted and joined the Polish armed forces in the West, with one in five Polish soldiers crossing over to the other side of the front. Data from the Eastern Front is fragmentary, but we know of, for example, 3,000 soldiers who deserted from the German army and joined the Polish army formed in the Soviet Union.

Until now, there have been two interpretations of Poles' service in the Wehrmacht. One is that they were victims of war who should be pitied, and the other is that they were traitors and collaborators. Meanwhile, a whole range of attitudes existed, with traitors and victims being the fewest, Kaczmarek wrote. There were instances of patriotic behavior, but also instances of fascination with the German army. Sometimes, especially after the Third Reich attacked the USSR, Polish volunteers for the Wehrmacht volunteered, but desertions were also common. According to Kaczmarek, the most common motivation for making these decisions was simply the desire to survive.

The Ukrainian Liberation Army (UVV): This functioned as an umbrella designation for various local Ostbataillonen (Eastern Battalions) and volunteers scattered throughout the regular German Army (Wehrmacht).

The 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Galician): A specific combat division formed primarily from Ukrainian volunteers in the Galicia region. Roughly 80,000 men initially volunteered, and tens of thousands went on to serve directly in the division or its associated police regiments.

The Ukrainian National Army (UNA): Formed in the final months of the war (March 1945) to consolidate various Ukrainian units fighting alongside the retreating German forces.

Hiwis (Hilfswillige): A significant number of Ukrainian volunteers and captured Red Army prisoners of war served as non-combat auxiliary helpers within regular German army units.

Early Nationalist Detachments: Smaller specialized units formed early in the war under German intelligence (Abwehr), such as Nachtigall and Roland battalions.
