On #VEDay80 WW2 might seem like ancient history but it was still casting a shadow over our lives in Britain well into the 1960s. My mum never had a banana or orange until she was 11. Rationing was only completely scrapped in 1954. (In 1952 tea, eggs, cream, sugar and sweets were still rationed. Cheese, and butter and cooking oil up to 1953. And meat and bacon into 1954). As kids we were always told if nothing else "You must eat your meat" because it was still considered scarce.
We played on bomb sites and had to cross them to get to school with the ends of houses exposed, fire places hanging mid-air and curtains still flapping. We had concrete air raid shelters in the playground. And the human cost was evident. With a neighbour scaring us kids by shouting and directing traffic in the road. We were told he was suffering from shell shock.
@mariaba692@cchukudebelu I don't know about lying. I'm talking about the ones taken to Naija to avoid them adding to criminal statistics. I've friends who are now grateful their parents shipped them to Naija.
🗣 “Is this a f*cking shelter?”
🗣 “60 million down the drain.”
🗣 “Go buy a proper bagsman.”
Turkish let’s rip over Arsenal’s exit of the FA Cup. 😤

@mariaba692@cchukudebelu Raising a teenager in London is not a joke, especially if the child shows signs of criminal activities. He will thank his parents in the future.
@Wizarab10 Oga, sit your wife down and communicate. Don't bring the "I'm the head of the house" mentality to this matter. Both of you should converse. Listen and assure her all will be well. Do this often and you will see changes.
@ibukun_tayo@Wizarab10 Relocating is a big deal; it is a culture shock to most people, and they find it hard to adapt. Unlike Naija, where you have people helping with the kids, abroad, it is not so. On top, you have mad bills, etc. It can be daunting if you don't have a sound support system (family ).
@DoublePrince001 @dammiedammie35 😂😂 casting assertion based on what Bob said in the recording: you are not listening. Without Bob’s statement, there would have been no assertion. I appreciate your time though. Have a good day too ✌️🏾
@DoublePrince001 @dammiedammie35 I thought we'd moved past this part. So, are you saying VDM is wrong for making the recording available to the public?
@DoublePrince001 @dammiedammie35 But you know it's not that simple. Don't let Nigerian corruption and inconsistency drive our reasoning. No, Bob’s conversation was private, but VDM did what an average concerned citizen ought to do.
I read that Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has “directed an unconditional and comprehensive investigation into the allegations of bribery and corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service”.
I know — and I hope you know too — that ‘it’s all cruise’. Yes.
Let me call on two things to support my claim: (i) Precedent; (ii) Rot.
On precedent. In 2019, after the release of my undercover investigation for which I deliberately got myself jailed at Ikoyi Prison (preceded by a five-day detention at Pedro Police Station), the then interior minister, Ogbeni Rauf Aregebesola, publicly commended me and promised an investigation.
Ladies and gentlemen, next month will make it five years since Aregbesola made that vow; I am still awaiting the outcome of that investigation. You see, Ogbeni was speaking at a prisons-related European Union event, and he simply knew the right things to say. That’s one precedent confirming the typical Nigerian politician’s mastery of gallery play, public sentiment manipulation and seizing a momentous publicity opportunity, at the expense of actually getting any job done.
But it’s not like Aregbesola didn’t lift a finger; like Tunji-Ojo, he did order the composition of a committee. From the prison sources I built during my stay, I can tell you Ikoyi Prison had foreknowledge of the committee’s visit, consequently utlising the lengthy notice to cover up its tracks. The delegation from Abuja arrived in Lagos to plastic sights, discovering nothing of significance. Meanwhile, this committee never reached out to the journalist who reported what they were supposedly investigating: no phone call, no email; nothing. No attempt to ask if there were things he saw that did not make it into his story.
Then the rot is too deep for committee handling. This investigation directed by Tunji-Ojo will be executed by who? The prison controller or yet another committee? Could Bobrisky have ‘disappeared’ from Kirikiri Prison without the knowledge of senior prison officials? Is the controller-general of prisons going to feign ignorance of the heavily-monetised special cells inside prisons? Will the assistant controllers claim to be unaware their prisons are business centres where warders are sellers and inmates buyers of everything merchandise from phones to weed, ‘coke’ and booze? So, who exactly will spearhead Tunji-Ojo’s investigations? The same complicit officers?
We play too much in this country, I swear to the high heavens. Let’s be serious about becoming a functional society for once. And it starts with public office holders taking the people seriously. No more perfunctory directives that offer nothing more than media-applause value.
