Critically panned films from ~20-30 year ago that enjoyed a prestige bump from reappraisals (e.g. Eyes Wide Shut, Starship Troops, Showgirls, Speed Racer). They got boosted by millenial critics' childhood nostalgia + smartass irony, which won't age well.
@emilyjashinsky What's getting lost is the context of the late 00s/early 10s culture war. The idiosyncracies of Jezebel feminism were shaped by incessant skirmishes with reddit, PUA, mens' rights, gamergate etc trolls in comments sections and forums, which people actually read at the time.
@madisontayt_ When ordering, is it better to (1) say "I'd like a martini, please" and pause for the bartender to ask your preferences or (2) name every spec immediately ("I-would-like-a gin-martini-vermouth (dry)-forward-olives-no-not-dirty-please")? Some bartenders get annoyed either way.
@verymidengineer@PEWilliams_ The second photo (the row of snack and drink bars with seating) is the High Line walkway itself, not underneath or off a spur. On the other side of the railing is a parallel walkway with a full outdoor restaurant/bar and video art installations :)
@corpseinorbit Dick Dale’s surf rock version of Miserlou probably did some work in popularizing the use of tremolo with the double harmonic scale, which sounded to western audiences exotic/“Arab”/“desert” etc.
@mac_mold What everybody forgets is that during the prime Wes Anderson years, his aesthetic was a foil to Bush Administration blood thirsty homophobic nationalism that was in overdrive at the time. Hard to imagine now, but it was borderline subversive for a moment.
@irl_neil Is the surprise that left wing people are expected to wear their politics as a personal brand? Maybe she was radical all along and just didn’t care to signal it.
@Tzap17 @highway_62 @kalebhorton Totally fair—I just know that people who identity with NorCal project their idea of that to SLO as a made-up boundary. Maybe Monterey etc is more accurate. But in any case locals from the Bay and Sac call themselves NorCal, and it’s not just the the top 1/3 of the state
@MatthewHoppock Their brilliant system is they wait until one or two days before a final hearing, and cases outside that posture are SOL. I’ve only gotten one response out of six so far :/
@abogadojuanito They’ve been rescheduling distant IHs in NYC on less than a month’s notice, with no explanation given. Even the IJs with imm experience don’t care that this is impossible. I wonder if these demands for evidence in advance is to given them leeway to advance IHs on a whim.
@LilySAxelrod My client was charged with false personation because the police officer didn’t understand the date format on ID, ICE picked him up following the arrest, and then the TA used this as ammo during the bond hearing......
@car1ygoodman A history connecting US neoliberalism imperialism to the push factors that lead to immigration patterns eg NAFTA, CIA interventions in Guatemala, etc. Asylum work lacks that context when you are required to create narratives of persecution and victimization.
