While he failed his original mission to cross Antarctica, he achieved something far more legendary: He didn't lose a single man.

Culloden: The Jacobite Dream Shattered.April 16, 1746. The moor of Culloden lies shrouded in cold mist, the sodden ground beneath the feet of nearly 5,000 Highland warriors. They stand tense, hearts pounding, facing the well-drilled ranks of the British government army led by the Duke of Cumberland. For the Jacobites, this is the last desperate gamble to restore Charles Edward Stuart—“Bonnie Prince Charlie”—to the throne. For over 60 years, the Jacobites fought to bring back the Stuart line, the “King over the water.” The Highlanders, fierce and proud, charge forward with broadswords and targes, but are met by a brutal wall of musket fire and fixed bayonets. The government troops, disciplined and equipped with artillery, mow down the Jacobite ranks. In less than an hour, the dream of a Stuart restoration dies. Nearly 1,500 Jacobites are killed or wounded; the survivors are relentlessly hunted in the aftermath. Culloden is more than a defeat—it is the final, crushing blow to the Highland way of life. In the wake of the battle, the British government enacts harsh measures: tartan is banned, clan chiefs are stripped of power, and the Gaelic culture is suppressed. The Jacobite risings end here, and the British state is secured. Culloden’s moor remains a silent witness to the end of an era and the last pitched battle fought on British soil.Witness the fierce last stand of the Highland Jacobites at Culloden—the day that changed Britain forever. #History #Scotland #Jacobites #Culloden #Highlands #Battlefield #UKHistory
