Terrestrial+marine research/25years of Scientific diving/Outstanding science
Congrats to Dr Ella Gilbert, a climate modeller at BAS, who has won the 2022 Emerging Communicator Award from @RMetS 🏆
Ella's a prolific climate science communicator and can regularly be spotted on TV news and on her own socials as @Dr_Gilbz 💪

@oceans_and_ice Absolutely enormous effort from so many Marine Assistants and Bonner Teams over the years. What a fantastic endeavour to be part of and to host in the Bonner Lab. 🥳
My first job out of undergrad where I was part of a long-term data collection for 2.5 years. Beyond the amazing experience, this appointment helped me decide that graduate school was for me. Very grateful to have been included!
Asked recently "what is one of your greatest recent accomplishments" well here it is https://t.co/d2dqEFH6RJ three years of my life into the 2 decades of sustained year round oceanographic measurements on the Antarctic Peninsula has been published https://t.co/oJz0dHnWNT
Amazing to see our paper published and fully open access for the world to see! Thanks to the illustrious @KRHendry for excellent leadership and the rest of the star-studded team for all contributions to the flotilla!
Last week we came across a non native, drifting bull kelp (Durvillea) in Ryder Bay @BAS_News Rafts can transport other non native species to the continent. We found open water goose barnacles (Lepas australis). These are not a threat but harmful invaders can also hitch a ride
#Weather week: this Automated Weather Station (AWS) set up on Anchorage Island, #antarctica measures temperature + humidity of air + soil, PAR and wind speeds.
Gathers data for terrestrial experiments in the area.
Needs calibrating (⬇️fancy barometer) and check over once a year.
25 years ongoing oceanographic data set in coastal waters of the WAP - thanks to the dedication of endless research assistants at Rothera.
500m CTD casts - hand-winch only 💪

Celebrating #PolarPride . Diversity and different perspectives form the basis of science and research. Let's celebrate it among the community, not suppress it.
Twin Otter landing in the background for good measure.

This survey constitutes part of the long term marine monitoring. The team visit this dive site, Beautiful Bulge, once a month. Check out the spetacular explosion of colour and life! Photos from ROV surveys conducted by Marine Biologist @nadiafrontier & boating officer Louis Day
From ROV to diving
Monitoring the feeding activity in antarctic benthic suspension feeders using an ROV mounted GoPro during the polar winter. We are now back to using divers to conduct this survey. Clear upregulation of feeding activity in response to the summer bloom

Flying into Rothera research station. Can you spot the runway (bottom left)? Check out Sheldon #glacier on the right. It’s been increasingly receding over the last decades, tracked by @BAS_News scientists via satellite imagery.

Plankton trawling has given an insight into what is living in the water column around the Rothera research station. A recent study conducted by Alice Clement has identified a range of organisms from amphipods to larval stages of benthic organisms (1/2) #larvalecology#Antarctica
The Dash on it's second flight back north this season.
The Dash will fly the Punta Arenas to Rothera leg over 30 times this year bringing support staff and scientists onto the continent.
It'll also do some supply runs to Sky Blu and conduct Aero Surveys.
