The issue with most Christian music/art/literature is obviously that it sucks. It's antithetical to the message that repeats itself constantly in the Bible—It's what in your heart that matters (Abel), not what you offer as an outward, shallow display of faith. (Cain.) It's trying to shortcut divine inspiration and the artistic process by creating something with predetermined outcomes and symbols. Taking a rap song about cars and cash and women and swapping out the lyrics to something about Jesus doesn't suddenly make it a worthwhile piece of art. It's still garbage, perhaps even worse, because at least the person who wrote about cars and cash and women might have been sincerely passionate and inspired to write about those things.

The story of Jesus, when you actually read the Gospels, is intense, and weird, and surprising, sometimes seemingly contradictory, and often Jesus does the opposite of what you think he might. It's the inverse of propaganda, because it doesn't reinforce your existing desires and worldviews, or offer up easy answers.

That's what art should do. It's supposed to open up a window into a new vista, not create a tunnel so you can just comfortably crawl down further into your own delusions.
